This is an older model, but the routing might be similar.

Look under the "running boards" Sears(AYP) sometimes put them under there. If not, go to www3.sears.com, type in your 917.xxxxxx model number and the pictures will show you an exploded view of the belt configurations

my clutch belt will not stay on the pulleys Craftsman 42 in. LT 1000

In the Google search box type belt and pulley diagram craftsman lt 1000.....then Search images. The first 4 images feature "springs" however, you can clearly see the motion belt diagram. Hope this information is helpful.
