Might be to a broken loading belt, or damaged loading gear wheels. Check it. If gear wheel is faulty, it will be best to repalce the disc loading mechanism.

I'm afraid you are dealing with a weakened Laser on the unit. The cost vs. benefit ratio of fixing this unit is not worthwhile.

You will find that there are newer versions of this device on the market less expensive than what you paid for the unit you have now.

Look on the bottom of the unit. There is a hole with the letters ex and op. Shine a light in the hole and you will see a white plastic object with a slot for a slot screwdriver. You can turn this either way but be careful. If you feel resistance and the object does not turn, turn the other direction and the unit will open. Remember if the disc loaded the clamping of the disc is in place so you must turn it the proper way to let the current disc loose hence the op and the ex. Op is open. Ex is exchange.

Dvd slot will not open - got code 'L1"

L1 is not an error code, in fact it is Line-1 that is set when combo selected VCR mode.
Set combo on DVD mode by setting its input button on remote or unit front to get dvd tray eject

Not eject

On my Sony SLV-281P DVD/VCR Combo, if you pull down the spring loaded door for DVD you will see a white gear on the left side under tray....rotate that gear counter-clockwise. This will manually drive out the DVD tray far enough to enable you to pull it out the rest of the way.

DVD player disc tray won't open

If unit has a belt drive to open and close the tray see if it has stretched or fallen off the pulley.

MY DVD WONT EJECT

Open up the component and get access to where the plastic gears and linkages of the DVD are visible. Most of the time, the 'rack and pinion' type linkage to move the tray, separated. Put them back together... NOW! Here is a picture of a toshiba DVD with the problem.

Eject tray belt broke

Opening the DVD player tray is not as hard as you would think.

1. Remove three black screws holding the outer cover on the unit (located on rear of unit)

2. Carefully remove front panel trim by gently prying six clips (3 on top, 3 on bottom) away from unit and pulling panel away from unit.

3. Locate opening at the front of the DVD player that houses a larger white gear.

4. Using a finger, gently move gear until DVD tray begins to move outward.

5. Continue until DVD is fully ejected.

6. Try plugging the unit back into AC outlet and attempt to Open/Close the tray using the provided button on the Front Panel Circuit Board.

7. Reverse steps above to put unit back together.
