I have an MSI A5000. It does not come with a firewire port but I'm trying to find out if it's possible to purchase one to install. If so, what kind?

next drop that nasty old huge battery off the bottom of PC
remove ac power pack. for 15minutes
then put back only AC power pack and hold power button for 10 full seconds and RELEASE IT.

If you're asking if a Dell OptiPlex 7010 USFF will support Firewire the answer is No...Unless you purchase and install a Firewire card

I don't recommend any USB to Firewire convertors but if you can find a Firewire Convertor PCI Express Card you can try installing it but remember the USFF has only one Mini PCI Express 52-pin connector, I've highlighted a possible product. This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the Windows 7 Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. If you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.

If you are trying to capture from a digital camcorder (tape), you have to use a firewire connection, USB does not work as stated in requirements.
Adding to what Walt said, firewire cables don't connect to a USB port. If you don't have a firewire cable, you need to purchase one. And if you do, don't buy a cheap one. Buy cheap, buy twice.

you don't convert the files, you just downlod them via a firewire comnnection.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder....
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
Open your editing program and choose the capture mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection....

The USB port on the camera is to download still pics from the Camera's SD Card to your computer. USB connector is not for video downloading.

For video downloading you have to use FireWire port. Your computer must have a FireWire port too. You will need some sort of video downloading software - like Microsoft's MovieMaker. There are some free software to download videos from mini dv camcorders to computer. It takes 1Hr to download 1Hr tape - you have to play it all to record it all.

3yrs ago when I purchased this cam, I did not have FireWire port in my computer. I searched online a lot and found a way to download video using USB - it was tough, complicated. It was possible, but quality was too bad and too many dropped frames.

If you do not have firewire port, google for FireWire PCI Card, should be <$10. You have to install it inside your PC. Also search for FireWire cable ($10+/-) that will match BOTH camera and PC ports.
