Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link :- http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/finders?pg=ddfinder&cm_re=other-_-suprcn-_-download You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the variour drivers, they will then unzip and expand into a folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder.

Cracked monitor

Hi there.
I'm in no doubt that the screen has to be replaced and maybe other components to if they have suffered shock damage.
If you want to check to see if the system still works plug an external monitor to the laptop, then use the keyboard toggle to switch screens (usually hold down Fn and hit the F key with a monitor icon on it)
If you get a good display whilst using the external and the OS works properly then it will just be the screen and any plastics that need replacing.

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

The laptop was unplugged and went into standby mode when the battery ran out. I have recharged the battery but the standby indicator is still on and nothing happens when I try to start it.

can you take out your battery and plug in the power? if it works, i suspected it's a battery faulty. if not please make sure to charge up your battery up to 100% then boot up your machine normally.

More Laptop issues

Most likely video memory.
Try to hook up an external monitor and switch from your LCD screen to the external (Fn key and F7 or whatever key indicates by a little picture that you can go to another monitor.)
Does that work? If so, your video on the motherboard or video card is bad.

I purchased Compaq Presario CQ40 Notebook / laptop

Your computer may simply be unable to run 2 operating systems. On the odd occasion the main OS usually the newest one in this case vista is running in the background and interfering with kernel operations even if you have selected "Previous version of windows" the 1 and only solution i know of is to not only re-format XP but Vista also.

http://www.drivermax.com/
the website above MIGHT be able to find driver needed but i dont think it is a driver problem.
This may be the only way- do this first

IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

Hi there
You have been given the correct advice.
Once your monitor screen has cracked the LCD ( liquid crystal display) tends to run or move, if you take the screen out you can replace it via the code on the back of the screen.

My display gets distorted

There is a simple test to narrow the possibilities. Connect your Thinkpad to a known working monitor using the video out connections at the back base of the computer. Then power on your R40 and see if the distorted screen develops on the known working monitor. If it does then you very likely have the BGA video problem, or Ball Grid Assembly problem and the problem is caused by a video/graphics chip on the motherboard. If you known working screen paired with your R40's base works fine, then you know it is a problem related to the screen itself and will call for either a new inverter or new backlight or new screen depending on further tests. But my bet is that it is the BGA problem which you can learn more about by searching for those terms on the net. There are services that repair ("reball") these BGAs but you have to remove the motherboard from the computer, or pay the service to do so. You can download the HMM, Harware Maintenance Manual, from IBM/Lenovo's site to get an idea of what is involved in opening up your R40 to extract the motherboard. This should help you narrow things down.
