This is common with some units if they are left a long time in a bag or not used sometimes the camera goes bad. I had this happen to a Nikon. Had to replace camera. Cheaper that way. It sounds like it skipped some teeth on the gear. Just take it apart and sync it correctly. Or try pulling on it once it is out as far as it wants to go and force it the rest of the way until it slips back to the right position.
