Television popped and screen went black
This sounds like a short circuit of some kind, and I couldn't tell you for sure what happened to make it do this. The first thing to try, though, is to check if the supplied plug is fused. If it is, change the fuse in the plug and then plug it back in to the wall and switch it on. Be careful though, the TV could very well do the same thing again when you do this! The next thing would be to disassemble it and have a look, as otherwise there's no telling what's happened to it.
Make sure, also, that nothing has been dripping on it (like a leaky pipe) or spilt on it, as this is a common reason for short circuits. If it's wet, if there are "tide marks" on the case (ie marks where liquid has dried), or if there are signs of damp above it on the cieling, then move it away from that area and let it dry out for a few days before trying to plug it back in with a new fuse.
Unfortunately, though, it does sound like your TV is pretty dead. You might find a local electronics or computer wizkid who could disassemble it and find the parts for you, but be wary of how much that costs too.
Realistically if changing the fuse doesn't work, and I'm not sure it will, your best bet would be to sell it as spares or repairs on ebay, stating that the screen is mostly likely still working (unless there was sound after the screen went black, then it's probably the screen itself) and use the money to put toward a new TV.
