I have a 1983 yamaha virago xv500 and i am having problems starting it when its cold and keeping it running. i have great spark and fuel it flowing from the tank and the carb seems fine. i am not sure if the lines from the transfer pump to the carb are connected correctly

Check the battery should be 12V or more , Then check the coils the connections are under the gas tank make sure they are securely connected.
What kind of fuse box do you have? The glass fuses? Or did you replace the fuse box. If it is the glass fuses you need to replace with a new fuse box.
Check the kill switch and the side stand switch.
Check the coils too..
