SOURCE: trying to swap motor from a 2001 xl 1200c to a

I have schematics for both year model bikes. If you want more information, you'll have to be more specific as to the exact trouble you're having. There's not that much difference between the two engines. If you want a copy of the schematics, contact me directly and remind me of the year and models of the two bikes. [email protected]

2008 sporter xl when started it idles slow an the engine light comes on then the idle picks up a little and the light goes offf

Hi, Anonymous it should be noted that the reasons your FI light stays on constantly or flashes and your bike will or will not start and may turn over or may not and run great or sputter, these conditions will vary from bike to bike depending on the year, make, and model and you should always refer to your owners/service manual for proper diagnostic procedures. It should also be noted that any type of prior work done to the bike or an abnormal event occurrence IE: adding accessories, electrical curiosity/adventures, laying the bike down/crashes, rain storms/bike washings just before FI light issues started can be significant hints/aids into tracking down the gremlin, also carry the appropriate jumper wire to access fault codes to reduce the risk of being stranded or towed. The newer the bike the more sensitive the ECM becomes and will not let the bike start when aftermarket accessories have been installed without being reprogrammed. That being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty Fuel Pump, fuse or system relay switch.
2. Battery starting to fail due to old age/damage, perform a load test.
3. A discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty safety switches/sensors: run/off, ignition, clutch lever, neutral, side stand, tip over, fuel, and or their connections.
5. Broken wire or worn insulation exposing wire to a ground situation especially inside wire harness at tight bends around fairing brackets, under dash panels, under fuel tanks over cylinder heads, etc. Many harnesses are open on the ends that will allow water to enter and accumulate at v-bends.
Dielectric grease and contact cleaner are your best friends for wire/cable/harness connectors, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets.
6. Installation of aftermarket accessories ie. exhaust systems, mufflers, air cleaners, fuel tuners, electrical component, etc.

Where is the fuse box located on a 2001 harley sporter

Best as I can remember, it's behind the triangluar piece on the frame on the left side of the bike. When you take the frame cover off, you'll see the main breaker. I think the fuses are on the backside of this plate.

Good Luck

2004 sportster, engine light comes on then goes off. 12,000 miles on bike. notable; when startimg it acts like it's not going to turn over but then always does, battery is 2 years old. could this just be a...

engine light may mean change or add oil or airfilter is dirty.make sure all hoses are still hooked up.The pause befor starting could be the battery but is more likely the start relay solenoid or the starter brushes are worn and may need cleaning or replacing.the brushes wear out and leave their dust in the starter causing the resistance in the starter to get higher over time.(slow to start spinning, and acts like battery is weak.)

No this is not right. I would see what size your pilot jet is , drop a number and try again. Less than one and a half turns out on the adjustment screw usually means your pilot jet is too large

2004 1200 r oil light came on killed the starter fulll of oil?

The oil light should come on when you turn the key on, then go out when the engine starts. It is NOT an oil level light, it shows PRESSURE.

Your "click" is a bad/corroded connection on the starter terminals , battery terminals, low battery, bad wires, or a defective solenoid. Charge the battery. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive. Remove the nuts holding the wires to the starter, clean all connections at the starter, frame and battery with a wire brush. Get them CLEAN!! Make sure the big cables are in good shape. If that doesn't fix it, you will need a solenoid. Maybe a starter and/or relay too.

Ignition trouble

the battery is drained. The kill switch only turns off the motor, while the lights and anything else that can continue to draw power will continue to do so till you turn the key off.
