I have a 08 Buell 1125r. When first gear is engaged and I start to ride off the transmission sounds like it is making a metal rattling noise. The other gears sound fine as I pick up speed and up shift. The noise only happens in first as I take off. What could be making the noise in the transmission?

The noise is normal, the 1125 motor does make a rattling noise. I have two of them, they both do it in addition to others I have ridden. Get the valves checked at 12,400 miles per the schedule in the manual, but odds are they will still be in spec. :)
Yes,There is a ongoing problem with the STATOR on the 1125r. It needs to be replaced - I would get it redone or a new one from EBR(erikbuellracing). No if ands or but's about it.
Go to your dealer and have the official Buell wiring harness mod fitted. Normally this will be under warran. The other possible problem could be your alternator. The dealer will be able to determine which is which.
I had a problem when I first purchased my bike, I could start the bike 3 times and even after riding the bike would die. I ended up having to have the Harley Dealer come out and pick up the bike to fix it. Turned out, they had to "update the system software" on the bike. Hope this helps.
4.0l's are notorious for valve rattle on cold start-up. There is really nothing you can do to make it go away short of completely replacing the valve train in the top end, and that isn't a permanent fix. It's is an top end oiling issue from the factory. Just don't race your engine on cold start-up until the rattle stops.
The rattle in the transmission sounds to me to be more of a loose dust shield/heat shield around the transmission or exhaust than a mechanical issue.
