The chief benefit with synthetic oils is they can withstand higher heat and flow better when cold.
10w40 or 20w50 will work. Manual Recommends Yamalube 4 (10w30 or SAE 10w30 10-100 F)
Yamalube 4 (10w40 or SAE 10w40 35-120 F) approx.
API Service SE,SF, SG type or higher.
Crank case oil capacity without filter 2.75 quarts
Crank case oil capacity with oil filter 2.96 quarts
It is HIGHLY recommended not to add the stated capacity all at once. Check site glass often when nearing the total amount needed. You DO NOT want to overfill.
Clutch use the same oil? If you mean the brake system Recommended is DOT 4 brake fluid.
Manual only shows Clutch and cable system and adjustments.
Good luck!
Hope this helps

The clutch wont diengage

Might be time for a Clutch Slave Rebuild.

Has the Bike sat for many months? Sometimes the Clutches stick together because the oil , like, suctioned them together.
You can start the bike, hold in the clutch and kick it into first gear. It may stall out a few times but usually that will free up the clutches. Careful , the bike will lunge foward as yo kick it into gear

How much oil does the primary hold

It depends on the bike but gernerally it's a quart of oil whether it's a Sportster or Big Twin. On the big twins, it's acutally 36-44 ounces. Stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover, drain the primary, and refill until the oil comes to the bottom to the outer clutch drum, the aluminum right around the outside edge of the clutch assembly. Do not overfill with either model bike as the clutch will drag making it impossible to find neutral with the engine running.

2008 electric glide standard how to check and add gear oil

On the right side of the transmission is a chrome cover. This is the clutch release mechanism. In the cover is a plug that takes a large Allen wrench or hex key to take it out. This plug has a dipstick on it. Take the plug out, stand the bike up straight, and dip the dipstick in the hole. The oil level should be between the two lines. The transmission holds 20-24 ounces of oil. To check the primary, stand the bike up straight and remove the derby cover. The oil level should be just to the bottom of the outer clutch basket, the aluminum ring that is the outer edge of the outer clutch basket. The primary holds 36-44 ounces of oil.

What oil filter and air filter do you recommend for my harley 2005 flstn. How much oil goes in the motor, primary, and tranny

I use nothing but OEM oil filters and I've installed a K&N cleanable air filter in all of my personal bikes and many of my customer's bikes over the years. You can't go wrong that way.

You Softail should hold three quarts of 20W50 synthetic oil in the oil tank. The transmission hold 20-24 ounces of the same oil and the primary holds 38-42 ounces of the same oil. Harley's oil is the Syn3 oil that it sells. You can use speciality oil in your bike as well. Some of the more popular brands are Amsoil, Royal Purple, RevTech, Mobil, Redline, and Golden Spectro. They are pricey and you need to go the company's website and check for the proper recommendations of their oil.

On the primary, I always stand the bike up and pour the oil in through the derby cover. If you look at the clutch assembly, you'll see that the outer hub is made of shiny aluminum. Just inside this there is a dark colored flat looking metal piece that is actually the clutch spring. Fill the oil no higher than the lowest point on this spring. If you fill it further, the clutch will drag.

As for the engine and the transmission, they each have a dipstick. The sticks have two marks on them. The top mark is "FULL HOT", and the lower mark is 'FULL COLD", Keep the oil level between these two marks. Never overfill.

How many quarts of fluid go in the primary, tranny, and case of my 2005 dana superglide

Your bike holds three quarts of oil with the filter change. The oil goes in the tank that is located on the bottom of your transmission. The oil cap is on the corner of the transmission and is a 2-inch round cap with a long dipstick on it. The dipstick is marked with two marks. The Upper mark is "FULL HOT" with the lower mark being "FULL COLD". Keep the oil level between the two marks and do not overfill.

The transmission holds 20-24 ounces of oil. The filler cap is on the clutch release cover on the right side of the bike behind the exhaust. It takes a 3/8" Allen or Hex key to remove the plug. It too has a dip stick. Check the transmisson oil with the bike standing straight up. The two marks on the stick are the same as on the oil dipstick. Do not overfill.

The primary holds 36-42 ounces of oil. To add oil, stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover. Pour the oil directly into this hole. You'll notice that the outer clutch basket is made of bright aluminum. The darker flat metal piece just inside of this is the clutch spring. Fill the oil NO HIGHER than the lowest point on this spring. If you do, the clutch will drag and you will not be able to find neutral with the engine running.

Wont start

It is common for these to trip when layed over and the contact inside to stick and not re-set. It is a sliding wieght on a curved metal bar. When it slides too far to either side, it completes a ground circuit and kills your fuel pump. Dirt and crud can hold the slider in that postion even after the bike is stood back up. You might want to have a look at that. It lives under the seat on the right-hand side, I believe.... but don't quote me on that.
