Battery discharging; Voltage regulator tested @4.5,.750;.750,.758,.758

check between the three yellow stator wires in volts AC. should be 16-32 per 1000rpm. also check continuity to ground from a yellow wire. make sure there is a good ground. the regulator has 12 tests on diode mode. black to each yellow, it should be around.560 vdc then reverse leads and should get OL. then repeat for red to each yellow. if any results are different, your rectifier is no good, if stator measures good, rectifier is good, and all grounds and terminals are clean and tight, the regulator is junk.

My honda shadow is not charging. I think that it is the stater. How hard is that to replace?

Uf, first check connector for three wires coming from top left side engine cover. Connector can get bad and no electric is passing through. Start the bike and measure between + and - on battery. If you have over 13,5V/DC your fine. If you have a jumping DC (from 16- 19V/Dc) rectifier is bad, Stop engine, Disconnect the three stator wires connector and Measure between the three yellow wires on Ohms if they are connected, if yes, Stator is o.k.
Usually Stator is last one to go bad.

Hi I have a 2001 Honda shadow ACE motorbike. There are 3 yellow wires going from the alternator to the voltage regulator through a 3 pronged plug. They have become very hot and fried themselves at...

3) there may be damage that has caused this
2)doesnt matter which yellow wire
1)maybe fried regulator or stator coils or aged insulation which has allowed a short between windings

The three wires are the 3 poles of the stator windings,

Fix the wires and plug first(electronics shops will have suitable 3 or 4 pin plugs to use)
get a multi meter and check resistance, any pair should have same resistance, non should short to ground.
with the bike running they will produce AC current (maybe 50-60vAC)again any pair.
If you are getting good AC voltace, then put the meter across the battery 12vDC engine stopped should rise to 14 vDC (about) when engine revved to 3000rpm

No AC -new stator
No DC-new regulator
Note voltages are estimates, many bikes run very similar charging systems

How to check stater on 1992 honda shadow

Locate the wire harness coming out of the stator on the left crank case cover of the motor and follow it to the plug with three yellow wires. This is the stator plug. You should have continuity between any combination of the three yellow wires, but no continuity between any of the yellow wires and ground. If the stator yellow wires are grounding you will have to replace the stator. To replace the stator remove the left crank case cover and unbolt the stator from the inside of the cover. Do not forget to purchase a new left cover gasket with the new stator or you will just delay your riding.

2000 shadow. brand new battery but it won't stay charged. bike starts and runs well otherwise. 600 cc shadow

Locate the wires coming out of the motor. There is a plug with three yellow wires, check the three yellow wires coming out of the motor for continuity. Any combination of the three yellow wires should have continuity. But there should be NO continuity between any of the three wires and ground. If any of the yellow wires are grounded you have a bad stator. If the stator checks good you probably have a bad voltage regulator/rectifier.

I have a 98 Honda Shadow ACE VT750. The battery was replaced in May. I cannot get the battery to hold a charge. The starter fuse was just replaced. The bike will not start without jumper cables and...

Charge and load test the battery. If the battery sat dead for as little as two weeks , it could be sulfated and no good. If it is a Yuasa battery it only has a 6 month warranty , grab your receipt and race back to the dealer. They will charge and load test it three times . If it does not pass the load test you will get a new battery if it is still under warranty. Grab your voltmeter and unplug the plug with three yellow wires that is coming out of your stator. The three yellow wires coming from the stator should have continuity with each other and no continuity between any of the yellow wires and ground. That is the test for the stator. If the stator is good , the battery is good , then you probably have a bad regulator/rectifier. I suspect you just have a bad battery.

How do you test a stator for a98 honda shadow that is off the bike?

A Honda stator is tested the same way on or off the bike. You take a voltage meter and check for continuity between all three yellow wires (all combination's). You should not have any continuity between a yellow wire and ground. That is the sign of a good stator. Two yellows do not connect or a yellow grounds the stator is bad.
