SOURCE: honda vfr 400 does not idle

gummed up carbs, faulty fuel pump, blocked fuel filter.

all of these will give you that response, fuel starvation.
you are not getting the right amount of gas thru, unles you have the choke on which cuts out some of the air making your mixture a little richer.

if it sat over winter in storage, the carbs probably could do with cleaning. you can try removing the air filter and spraying a bunch in, let it sit over night and see what happens. a good fuel system cleaner (additive) may help. if you can get Berrymans B12 ( dont know what country you in) it may be just american. but if you get some double the dose throw it in the gas tank, run bike til hot and then put it away for the night. then next day hopfully should be better. also if you have an inline fuel filter you could try changing that. does it have an electronic fuel pump.? does it run constantly? http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp
that link will get you a free pdf service manual

SOURCE: i have a honda shadow areo 1100 the bike starts

You will have to check the carbs it seems the gas isn't flowing in freely into the float chamber and filling it up.

Your timing is off. Try backing the timing up to 4 degrees before top dead center!

85 honda sabre 1100 on stand in 5 gear and back wheel don't move is it frozen up ?

Is the engine Running? If the engine isn't running then it isn't a problem as you are trying to turn the engine over with the rear wheel, and you would need he Worlds Strongest Man to turn that over on his own. If the engine is running then you have a big problem and need to get it to a mechanics before riding it.

I just bought a 2000 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100. It appears to be "running rich" and friends have said I should adjust the throttle/idle. How do I do this??? Thanks

To adjust your idle speed there is a single screw (usually with a black plastic knob ) that hangs down between the two carburetors. Turning the knob will raise or lower the idle speed. Clockwise will raise the idle. Counter clockwise will lower the idle. Changing the idle speed will not lean or richen the mixture. To change the mixture you will have to rejet the carburetors. I assume the carburetors have been rejetted to compensate for an after market exhaust system. In which case the carburetors are set too rich (too big of a main jet size) to compensate for a bad flat spot in the acceleration. If this is the case, take out the main jets and replace them with the next smaller size. If the machine is stock then check your air cleaner. If it is restricted/dirty, then the extra vacuum caused by the dirty air filter is causing the rich mixture. Try changing the air filter or in stall a high flow air filter like a K&N. This will put the mixture back to normal.

Back fires 24/7?????????????????

Backfiring can be caused by fouled spark plugs (you have four, two per cylinder), bad spark plug caps, bad air cut valves on the side of the carburetors, but most likely leaking exhaust gaskets. I am guessing that you have changed the exhaust system but did not put new crush o-rings between the cylinder head and the head pipe. You should also change the tubular gasket/seals between the head pipes and the mufflers. If this does not fix the problem , take out the two screws that hold the air cut diaphragms in place and remove the covers . If the rubber diaphragms have holes in them or have become sticky they need to be replaced. Air cut diaphragms turn off the fuel during deceleration to prevent back firing. If they go bad they can cause poor running , popping , and back firing during normal operation.

Vt1100c2 backfires through pipes on deceleration - hesitates on accelerating. It runs fine at highway speeds. Seems to throttle down slow.

Could be running too lean, check the color of your plugs to know for sure, black and dry is rich white and blistered is lean.,
