Rock the bike back and forth and find the spot in the middle, then try shifting up into neutral.

This will take the loading off the gears (which is normal without the engine running).

Put the transmission in neutral with the engine OFF. Try to push the bike. If the bike will not roll, something has your rear wheel locked up and it's stalling your engine when you let the clutch out. Check the rear wheel and drive belt. There should be a bit of back and forth roll. You're transmission will not go into neutral. You may have a shifter problem inside of the transmission.

In most cases, if you'll make sure the fuel petcock is on (this should be vacuum controlled if it is the orginal petcock), pull the enricher out, twist the throttle twice, turn on the switch, and push the start button. DO NOT OPEN THE THROTTLE UNTIL THE ENIGNE STARTS UP. Your carburetor is equipped with an ENRICHER. An enricher circuit works differently from a "choke". If you open the throttle even a little while starting the bike, you'll render the enricher ineffective. You must leave the throttle completely closed until the engine starts up. Usually the enricher is rich enough that the engine goes to a high idle once it starts. But, on the other hand, you don't want to run the enricher for an extended time as it will foul your spark plugs. Allow the engine to run until it warms enough so that you can keep the engine running with the throttle then turn it off.

Sounds like you're letting it idle too long with the enricher on. The enricher circuit is VERY rich and it will foul your plugs. When you start the bike, run the enricher only long enough to where you can get the bike to stay running with the throttle grip or throttle lock. Turn that enricher off as quickly as possible. Your plugs are probably fouled.

It sounds to me like the primary chain may be rattling. When you start the bike, the engine is cold and the chain is at it's loosest. As you ride, it tightens up as the engine cases heat up and expand. But, when you let off on the throttle, the slack in the chain goes to the top run. This causes the chain to "lift" off the small engine sprocket. If it is loose enough, it will hit the top of the inner primary housing on the inside. Check the tension of the primary chain. It should be 3/4" to 7/8" when the engine is cold.

I'm sorry that this is about the best I can do since I'm not in a position to hear the noise for myself. It's a "best guess" check this situation. I ride a 1994 FXDWG and I love it. Just turned over 30K, no major repairs.

not running for a year! You have a varnish buildup in the low end circuit of the carb. You will need to remove the carb and do a full teardown of the carb to properly rectify this problem. SOMETIMES we are able to free up the passages by putting SEA FOAM cleaner in the tank , fill her up with fresh fuel and ride through the tank and it will clear up. SEA FOAM can be purchased at an auto parts store and is sometimes very effective. 1/4 cup to full tank fuel.
