They make an emulsion kit for coating the inside of a fuel tank. Just check with your local Parts dept. You must drain and remove your tank and prep the inside of the tank with sandpaper or I have found that a 12" - 18" extension for a drill and a wire brush work the best. Then use mineral spirits or something along that line to flush out the inside of the tank and then make sure you have cleaned out the rust as best as you can, be careful the wall of the tank is not all that thick, then use the acid to clean out the inside of the tank again. This will prep the inside of the tank to adhere to the coating. Then pour the emulsion coating into the tank and roll the tank around coating the entire insides of the tank. Let dry I suggest a good 24 hours but follow the instructions of the kit. That's it. Good Luck

SOURCE: need to know the best way to take gas tank out

You have several of options >

  • Remove the tank and try for a better tank from a salvage yard ( Google " motorcycle salvage honda " and " Vintage motorcycle parts honda ").
  • Get a new gas tank from Babbitts. Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. $270 to $650 depending on year. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
  • Keep your existing tank by getting a liquid tank liner. Pour it in, swish it around, let it set, rust is no longer a problem > ever. Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
Personally, the tank liner is low cost and works extremely well. Tank removal is an involved effort. You would be well served in getting a service manual for the bike. With the manual you can do more than just fix the tank. One oil change and the manual pays for itself. Now you can do a whole lot more than just an oil change.
Google "service manuals honda" or try your local library. Often guys will donate manuals to the library. You can also go to www.repairmanuals.com and probably purchase a manual there.

SOURCE: Fuel leaking into crankcase on 2001 Honda CBR 600

it's probably leaking from the carb and down the cylinder into the crankcase.
it is probably due to a stuck float in the carb. take the float bowl off and make sure it is clean. the float can also be full of gas not letting it float up and stop the gas flow. the carb will fill up and leak wherever it can which is likely the case

What is the best way to get rust out of a motorbike gas tank?

Remove Rust- Break down the rust using an acid, like vinegar or a commercial gas tank cleaner, and an agitator, like nuts and bolts. Shake this combination around in the tank throughout the day or longer, depending on the amount of rust and the acid you use.

Cleaning your motorcycle tank

USE ELECTROLYSIS. I recently got this bike for free and decided to just fix it myself. One of the major problems was old gelled gas and rust inside the tank. I thought about getting it bead blasted but because of my budget decided to try myself first. I looked online and found out about electrolysis. Finally a use for chemistry class. All you need is a 8-12 volt battery charger, Washing soda (NOT baking soda, It must be sodium carbonate.) water, and a wire hanger ( or something similar). fill the tank to the top with water and 1/3 cups of the Sodium Carbonate. Rig the wire through something non conductive so that it can sit inside the tank without touching the tank (otherwise you'll see some fireworks). Try and bend the wire into some kind of fork shape to get maximum surface area for the rust to grab onto. Once the wire is in place connect the Positive charge to it and the Negative charge to the tank. Leave it for 1-2 days and then take out the wire and clean it, flush the tank with some clean water and start the proccess again. When the tank is clean get some POR15 sealant and make sure your tank is sealed so it won't rust again. For more detailed intsructions just google electrolysis and there is plenty of documentation.

Motorcycle 2005 honda 750 rust in gas tank, how to clean fuel system.

There are product kits made for this purpose, consisting of a cleaner, then an etch, then a tank coating material. Follow directions carefully and should work fine. Also install a good filter between tank and pump. NOTE: this should have been posted in the motorcycle section.

How do I clean my petrol tank

Hi David:
Depends on how old and contaminated it is.
It never hurts to remove it from the frame, unscrew the valve assembly, and then rinse it out with solvent.
What year, make, and model are you working with?
Please reply as a comment to this post.
Cheers.

Need a gas tank for my 1993 honda shadow 600. Just got my motorcycle lic. and got this bike that had been sitting for 4 years. Is there a way to clean the tank or where can I buy one. really having...

What is wrong with the tank?? Rust? If not, the same gunk in the tank is in the carbs, They need to be cleaned too. If it is rust, you can clean and seal the tank like new again, with a little elbow grease and a product called POR, (paint over rust), It works great. leaves the tank looking like brand new inside, if it is gummed up from sitting, you will need to soak everything in carb cleaner, and scrub and clean and scrub and rub and wipe and pick out gunk till it is squeaky clean. Then maybe it will run. The jets in the carbs are super sensitive, the slightest spec of dirt or the tiniest clog, it will not run right. Check it out, hope this helps.

Persistant problem of one carb flooding carb cleaned several times new needle valve fitted what now?

Drain your tank and take off the fuel tank petcock. Look to see if the fuel filter is still intact/there. If it is damaged or missing replace it. The problem is rust in your tank. It causes the needle to stick open. You can turn your gas off and run your carburetor dry while riding to wash the rust past the needle to stop it from dripping while you ride. But the problem will persist until you fix the filter or add an additional inline filter to kill the problem at the source. I was having this problem 15 years ago with my CX500. To help stop tank rust always store your motorcycle with a full tank of stabilized fuel or for long storage (years)drain and coat the inside with storage oil.

How to clean rust from motorcycle gas tank

To remove the loose rust fill the tank to 1/4 of its capacity with small pebbles and shake it. To remove the rest fill the tank up to 1/10 with rust converter solution and slowly rotate it to cover all the rusted parts for at least half an hour.

How to clean a fuel tank after years of storage

Remove the gas valve assembly. Get a cupful of 1/2" nuts from the hardware store and put them in through the gas cap. Add 1/4 tank of kerosene or other "slow to burn" solvent. Put the cap back on the shake the metal nuts all around inside the tank. The nuts will abrade the rust and gunk so you can get the tank nice and clean. I suggest you then use a liquid tank liner. Google kreem products as a source. Now the tank will never rust again and you will get clean gas.

Could you take a moment and rate my answer? Thanks!
