I was riding my vulcan 1600 and got caught in the rain the next day I washed it and the bike started running funny it was missing when I twisted the throttle, then the speedometer started to move back and forth and was not reading correctly. I noticed it losing power popping like it was not getting gas correctly and when i turned it off it would not start battery was dead. Charged it up bike started right up.
Get a volt meter and check the three yellow wires coming out of stator / generator. All should read over 12.6volts, all should have same voltage. if not, chevk plug connections for burning or, if they are good, pull out stator for testing.
If stator is good, replace voltage regulator unit, usually under seat near battery.

Don't rely on on whether the bike will start at a gas station to determine if the charging system is working. Get the multimeter out and do a proper test. Should be getting about 14.5 volts @ around 3K RPM. It's too easy of a test to to just skip. If it is charging then start looking for something else. Was the new battery properly charged to begin with? Loose battery connection? I suppose the GPS could be too much but you said that it was dying last november, so I would suspect something else. P.S. you need a properly charged battery to get an accurate reading for the charging test.

It sounds like you are running out of battery, and that is why the bike is quitting.
Have you checked the charging?
Check the battery voltage with a meter after you have charged it. should be 13.5 volts or so. Start the bike, you may have lost a little but the voltage should increase as you watch the volt meter, rev the bike, Any increase?
If there is no increase or if it is decreasing in voltage then I would suspect you charging system.
Hope this is of some help.

thats normal there is usually alot of play

Sometimes after trying to start a bike with a weak battery the starter solenoid gets damaged,or loose connections develop on the solenoid due to heat.It should be next to the battery.

Pull the slide out of the carb and then move the clip on the jet needle down one notch. Two may be needed but start with one.
