1979 Suzuki GS 750 E Logo

I have a 1979 Suzuki GS750 and it fires great on 3 of the 4 cylinders, but not the 4th.

The 4th cylinder has spark, but the exhaust does not get hot like the other three. It sputters and backfires some. I have had the carbs cleaned and synced by a professional, but it still does it. Could it be spark plug wires, coil pack, or ignition? It does have electronic ignition.

SOURCE: 1979 suski 750,bike runs on 2 left side cylinders,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

With the indulgence of craigjamesbt...

A few additional ideas to consider:

  • it would be an electrical/ignition issue if 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 will not fire but not 3 & 4;
  • almost always, raw fuel on exhaust indicates a flooded engine. A flooded engine would most likely be a carb issue;
  • best way to determine if it is an engine concern is to do a compression test;
  • a way to test the right carb pair is to deliberately starve them of fuel by temporarily plugging/blocking the inlet port/seat with rubber similar in appearance as to those used for glue gun, not installing the needle and float. Assemble the carb and install. Start the bike and use/spray carb cleaner on the right side carb. Note if 3 & 4 will fire even intermittently.
Would appreciate a postback on results/updates on any developments.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: I have a 1990 katana 600 ,only running on 3/4

sounds like theirs no fuel goin into the mixture at the cylanders, best bet is to have the carbs tuned, they have to be tuned in series or it will throw the others off. so it;s best to have that donme at a shop unless you have a carb tuning kit then by all means go for it If your bike has been sittign a while then you probably have varnished carbs, this is easily fixed by getting a fuel addative like gunk
http://www.gunk.com/msds/M2616.PDF

http://www.gunk.com/fueltreatments.asp

also note that you are running a mixture with a motorcycle engine so not as mucth addative needed can get instructions on how mucth to add probably a cap full or two to a gallon of gass will be close to the limit you need. but it will clean the varnish out also has to run it a bit to get the fuel to flwo threw the system and eat the varnish andf deposits. good luck.

Did you sync the two carbs? If not the rear may be getting all the gas from the rear carb and none to the front. Twist throttle engine off and see if front carb cable is pulling the carb open.
Also unscrew the spark plug boot from the front spark plug wire and trim 1/8th inch off the wire and screw the boot back in. The plug wire end may be corroded on that wire.

SOURCE: My 98 Suzuki VL1500 has a weak spark to the rear

check your carbs. it might be dumping to much gas in that cylinder, causing the plug to fowl out and have a weak spark. make sure the carbs are adjusted and then sync them for proper fuel air mixture.

1998 Suzuki GSX 600 F (Katana) only running on 3 cylinders

Hey Anon,
...If the bike has been sitting for a long time,.. as you state..99.999% chance its the carburetors, they are probably clogged/stopped up/dirty.. (sitting for this long has actually ruined some carbs to the point of replacement).. all the garbage that is included in gasoline now is really bad on the insides of a carb!!) Take them to a qualified professional for checking, cleaning and setting .... Check the compression on all cylinders.. you should have at least 120+psi. MINIMUM.... with no more that 20PSI. max difference between ANY two cylinders... Forget about all the minutia in the first answer.. just a bunch of copy and paste... no real life experience..he's just racking up points

How do i wire the coils on my 78 suzuki gs 750. spark plug order which spark plug wire goes where??

There are 2 coils. The coil on the left provides spark for cylinders 1 & 4. The coil on the right provides spark for cylinders 2 & 3. The firing order is 1-2-4-3.
In case you don't know, this little tidbit is something to carry with you for life: Whenever a reference is made to a place in or on a vehicle, it is ALWAYS the perspective "from-left-to-right" of the seated vehicle operator.
In other words, in your case, as you're sitting on the bike, cylinder #1 is the one furthest to your left, and #4 is furthest to your right.

Toyota

Coil pack connection is physical: Coil 1 to Cylinder 1, 2->2, etc.

I am not sure if this is your question, but firing order matches spark to TDC (top dead center) on the power stroke. The design of the crankshaft determines this.

1-3-4-2 is common for most straight 4's. Cylinder 1 is closest to the crank pulley. I believe your coils are 'waste spark' which means it will fire two cylinders at the same time. When the coil fires, one cylinder is on the power stroke and is wanting this spark. The other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke at this time, and thus the spark is 'wasted' on that cylinder. But a cylinder with exhaust gas has high impedance, so most of the energy is delivered to the intended cylinder.

If your question was 'should I just connect 1->1, 2->2, 3->3, 4->4' [ yes!] vs. ' should I try to connect coils following the firing order' [no] then the answer is the first. The trigger wheel determines which coilpack fires when, you just need to hook up the wires number for number.

How do you replace a starter on a 1979 suzuki gs750 motorcyle

I suspect it is a very similar set up to my 81. It would probably be much easier if you remove the carburetors, (Something I've had to do MANY times, haha) but I have gotten mine out with them on. There is a metal plate on top of the lower end engine block, behind the cylinder block. Take the bolts out of the plate and remove it. You will see the starter, with a couple of bolts in it. Take them out and remove the starter.

I have Suzuki gs 750 e, model 1979. The engine is an air-cooled, 4-cylinder,4-cycle model equipped withdual overhead camshafts. I am looking for new camshafts for the engine. Do gs 1000 and 1100...

The simple answer is no. It is possible to put a complete 1000 engine into the 750. but this will involve making brackets etc.
Proberbly the easiest way to more power is to fit the barrells and top end from the GS850. This will fit straight on. Ideally, you will need the 850's carb, but the 750s could be jetted to suit. The exhaust is the same fittings, so you could retain the gs750 exhaust as well. They also share the same airbox.

1979 Suzuki GS750 won't start. new plugs, only getting spark with 3 at of 4. Does anyone know what might be the problem?

HI THATS ODD TO HAVE 3 SPARKING, AS THE IGNITION COILS ON THE OLD GS WERE 1COIL FOR 2 CYLINDERS IE 1&4 CYLINDERS USED 1 COIL AND 2&3 USED THE OTHER , SO IF YOU ARE GETTING A SPARK AT EITHER OF THESE THAT MEANS THE COIL IS WORKING, ON THE COIL THAT IS ONLY GIVING A SPARK AT 1 PLUG SWAP THE PLUG OVER AND SEE IF IT THEN SPARKS IN THE OTHER CAP THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE PLUG, IF THE PLUG THAT WAS SPARKING IN THE OTHER LEAD NO LONGER SPARKS IN THE OPPOSIT LEAD THEN OBSERVE THE LEAD REMOVE THE CAP AND EARTH THIS OUT WHILE YOU TURN OVER THE ENGINE, THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE CAP,

fuel flow to cold pipe cylinder may be stopped with trash or sticky float.Resistor in plug wire for the one not firing could be bad. Try changing coil from one that is firing to the one thats not,see if that pipe gets hot or does the same thing still happen. coil ,plug wire, or fuel would be my primary focus.
