Check the air intake hose between the air cleaner housing and engine for tears or on open to the outside air. Should be sealed so that the air flow sensor can send correct air flow amount to the engine computer.
if the idle air control valve is the problem, you most likely have experienced some rough idling of the car while in park and maybe driving, and RPM surges while the car is idling. THIS site provides more info on it.
