The air breather pipe coming off the engine had a hole in it. I replaced it but I still have problems. I think it's the valve connected to the pipe.
I have a hose that is broke on my 316i but i need a dwawing of my engine to identify the part .
Replacing the breather pipe is a temporary solution. The breather valve (cyclone separator) attached to it usually goes too. Awkward to get at with an alan key. The part is €50 in BMW. The pipe I replaced with some rubber tubing I had myself. It's working perfect now.

I sorted i by replacing the breather valve connected to it. Awkward trying to use an alan key where it is.
Had the same problem on my e46 and replaced the breather hose and valve - (now alright!) The problem started with a high pitced squeal - like a fan belt squeal ( HARD TO DIAGNOSE AT FIRST) my mechanic soon found out the problem - now fixed at a cost of £56 - BMW SYTNER (PARTS ONLY) i hope this helps someone?

I had a split in the breather hose which has just been replaced. The emissions light on the dash was extinguished follow a full diagnostic check but has now come back on, does this mean that i now have to change the breather valve also.

I've just had to replace the same hose on my 2002 316i SE.
It's called a CRANK CASE BREATHER TUBE and you are advised to do the Breather valve that it connects to at the same time.
The cost is approx £55 for the two parts and will take a couple of hours to fit due to having to remove the pollen filter and housing etc above to make the job a lot easier to do.
The hose that needs replacing (Crank case Breather) over time fills up with oil deposits (like tar) and blocks the tube causing the tube to **** together and cause the hose to wear / split etc.
The hose is a two part hose that is glued to a thinner water hose (not a great design and increases part cost) - I did not want to change this hose as well as there was nothing wrong with the water system / hose so I just removed the rubber banding and pulled them carefully apart (this will save you time).
By changing these parts my Engine light was reset and now stays off. :-)
The breather valve causes most of the problems
