My son has a 98 ZX2 that has been parked for a few months. I started it and drove it around our drive way... 600 ft...aprox. Was running fine... lost power and died... wouldn't start... was low on fuel... added some...still didn't start. Thought it was the fuel pump.
It sat for several months after... fresh battery and vola! Thought I'd try it before installing fuel pump. It started... drove it about 3-4 city blocks, pulled into our drive and it lost power and died... So... I replaced the fuel pump... still doesn't start.
Any Ideas?
I don't think it is flooded... can't smell gas... but I'll check.
By losing power, it acted the same way it would if it ran out of fuel... or if coil shut down. It cranks fine.... I put a fresh battery in it and it is at full charge.
I have not pulled the plugs nor have I taken a plug and grounded it while cranking the engine to see if I'm getting fire.
I planned on taking this step when I replace the fuel filter. It could have sucked up moisture from sitting.

You haven't flooded the engine correct, check the spark plugs. Also, how fresh is the gas? Try shaking the car to get the gas mixed up and try cleaning out the cylinders with a torch to blow out excess gas. You should also either try cleaning the spark plugs or replace them if they look bad. It is starting up fine, correct? The alternator is good, right? I believe it is since it sounds like you didn't drive it long enough to drain the battery but check it anyway. By losing power, did the electronics start shutting off first or did the engine die first as this would show whether the alternator is bad or not. Please answer my questions and get back to me on what shut off first when it died and I will help you narrow down the problem with this car.

had the same problem a few months back. right next to your stick shift [automatic] there is a little cilrcle. pop that peice of plastic out and stick a screw driver streight down. there is a little flapper that is conected to your breaks by a cable. it wont let you take the car out of park without your foot on the breaks, the cable may be broke. if you push the flapper down with the screw driver then you should be able to get the car out of park. if that works you know that your cable from breaks to that flapper is bad. i didnt replace mine i just drive around with a screwdriver stuck in the hole. you kindda have to fish around with the screwdriver to get it in the right spot but that should solve your problem. i pulled up to the pumps to get gas and when i went to leave the car wouldnt go out of park, so some guy came and showed me what to do and it has worked fine sense. good luck
There are 3 possbile diagrams, depending on whether it's equipped with AC and engine type. The 3 are listed below. Thank you for using Fixya and please remember to return to rate this answer. Greg
1) Start with the alternator.
2) Forward to the smooth idler
3) Forward to power steering
4) Down to A/C compressor
5) Back to crank pulley
6) Forward around tensioner
7) Back glancing off of water pump
8) Back glancing off of ribbed idler
9) Up around alternator (where you started)
Good luck!
