If it has original Rochester carb, they had flooding issues. Smell the exhaust for unburnt fuel when it dies. Be careful with flooding issues as they can catch fire with a backfire. Besides excess unburnt fuel, backfire is also associated with retarded timing and interrupted spark delivery..
If you can duplicate the event in your driveway, you can check fuel pressure and spark at the plugs when it won't start to narrow down the possible causes.
I would pull plugs from each cylinder see what is not firing. You may need new coil if any of the cylinders are not getting spark. Also animals this time of year need warm places to sleep squirls love to eat plug wires.

The po301 is a misfire code. The backfire can be caused by a excessive amount of fuel, bad valve timing etc. My guess is you have damage to an exhaust valve that may have occurred when you had the timing belt problem.A compression test will indicate if you have a leaking exhaust valve.The reason for the backfire is the exhaust valve is still partially open when the spark plug fires.
sounds like the fusable link which feeds power to the ignition switch has gone to the happy hunting ground. this fusable link is bolted to the starter motor battery terminal along with up to four others.
