Center rear seat does not have a shoulder/lap seat belt

Can I replace my 2002 Sierra extended cab rear bench seat which has a center lap-only seat belt with a newer year rear seat that has the center lap/shoulder seat belt? What year seat would work?

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2010

My issue is that my truck does was not made with a center SHOULDER seat belt, only the lap belt. The newer trucks have a center shoulder seat belt as part of the seat. I am hoping someone knows if a newer seat with the shoulder seat belt would fit into my 2002 Sierra extended cab truck.
    thanks

You should be able to go to the dealer and buy the center lap belts and can install them without having to by the seat just call your loacal dealer they can tell you how much thy are, less expensive than the seat.

Testimonial: "Thank you avid101. You have provided more information than i was able to get from my dealer and from GM. Neither wished to even address my question."

The problem is the mounting of the seat belt mount if there is not a place to mount the slider and locking device you you have no where to hook the shoulder bolt and if you don't place it in the right position the belt can kill you. For the lap belts they already have mounts installed under the seat to bolt them to the frame. If it does not have the mounts no one would install it because the engineering work has not been done and it would not have been tested. thats why I suggested you call the dealer. Sometimes they have a retrofit kit that can be installed it's pre engineered and the exact spot for where it should be mounted would be given. They really do a lot of research on safety lap belts because of people that have been killed by them. Thats is why I did not give you the dimensions, to be done right it has to be installed in the right location. If the lap belt is to high or to one side or the other it could cause you to be hurt or killed so it is very important to get this information from the Manufacture, if you replace the seats and their hight is different you change all the pivot points of the belts which could lead to to much pressure in an area that could kill you. And I would ask that you rethink your rating for this question The free answers really hut us when we get one thumbs up. Thanks for your time and I hope you get the right information because this could mean life or death to one of your loved ones.

Right thanks for the rate change, Call the nearest wrecking yard near you and ask them they can tell you. Here is what you are facing, obobma passed a law destroying all these older cars so they can't sell them they have to junk them, meaning they have to melt them down. The dealer is afraid to say or do anything because when you modify original equipment even thought it would make it safer are afraid of being sued if someone got hurt. All it takes is for someones family that has had a child killed by a seat belt being improperly installed suing the dealer, but they don't stop there. They sue the mechanic for his install they sue the dealer they sue the maker of the seat belt and they sue Fed-ex or whoever delivers it to them. Thats why the problem. If you call the local wrecking yards they can measure for you and may even install it correctly for you so your family is safe. Sadly thats the world we live in. Even if they charged you $100.00 for install if something went wrong their insurance could be canceled and lose their business. Most dealers are privately owned and lease the name of GM or Ford or Toyota and are Representatives only. I hope this helps you understand what you are up against. Thats why we are here.

Does a 1988 Cadillac Sedan DeVille have rear seat safety shoulder belts ?

The attached chart suggests to me that the 88 DeVille came with back seat lap belts as it is a conversion chart for the installation of backseat shoulder belts.

How are the middle row safety belts supposed to function properly? my used van is showing signs of character.

It depends on your seating. My Windstar has bucket seats, and the very back is a bench type 3 seater. The middle row normally has 2 shoulder/lap belts. It really depends on the perks that the original owner opted for upon purchase. For instance my driver seat has a button on the right side to adjust the lumbar area of the seat.
Checking CarFAX will let you know if the vehicle has ever been in a major accident. Most people do not realize that after an accident, seat belts and their anchors should be replaced.

Reaching rear seat belt on 1997 crown victoria

Lap belt or shoulder harness? Lap belt - remove rear seat bottom by pushing in on bottom edge of the seat cushion and lifting. This will expose the lap belt and its anchor. Shoulder belt should be accessible via trunk compartment. If not then you'll have to remove the back of the rear seat to get to it.

How do we fix front passenger side seat belt retractor on 1999 Ford Taurus? It will not pull out....

you may have to remove the bolt that holds the buckle to the floor. Try to push the belt into the retractor and see if it frees up.

I assume you are saying it is in the locked mode. It has an automatic lock mode for holding a child seat. When the belt is pulled all the way out, it goes into locking mode. You will hear it ratchet when the belt starts going back in.

Section 01-20A: Restraints, Active 1999 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Safety Belt, Lap/Shoulder The dual locking mode retractor on the shoulder belt portion of the combination lap/shoulder safety belt for the front seat passenger and rear seat outboard passengers operates in two ways:
  1. In the vehicle sensitive (emergency locking) mode, the shoulder belt retractor will allow the occupant freedom of movement, locking tight only on hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The front and rear outboard seat belt retractors can also be made to lock by pulling/jerking on the belt.
  1. In the automatic locking mode, the shoulder belt retractor will be automatically locked and remain locked when the combination lap/shoulder safety belt is buckled and does not allow the occupant freedom of movement. This mode provides tight lap/shoulder belt fit on the occupant and on a child safety seat or infant carrier installation restraint.
  1. When the combination lap/shoulder belt is unbuckled and allowed to retract completely, the retractor will switch to the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode.
sxh~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: REAR-FACING INFANT SEATS SHOULD NEVER BE PLACED IN THE FRONT SEATS.
The automatic locking mode must be used when installing a child safety seat on the front passenger seat and rear outboard seats where dual locking retractors are provided

Add middle seat belt to make 3 seat belts on a bench seat?

I'll begin by saying I'm surprised there isn't a 3rd belt on a bench seat, but I think you are entering dangerous territory. There is an immense amount of engineering, testing, and development involved in seat belt systems. They are anchored very securely at points that are reinforced and designed to withstand a human body being thrown against the belt, transferring the energy to the anchors of the belts. So, besides being beyond the scope of being possible to install by your average mechanic, I shudder to think of the legal angle. If u were to be involved in an accident, and someone was injured or worse in that seat wearing the added belt, the lawsuit possibilities are scary. Having said all this, check with your local dealer, maybe the Durango is set up somehow for an extra belt, but I've never heard it before.
