Take the inside covers off the tailgate and lubricate the mechanical parts ie spring. You may have to turn the yoke the first couple of times until it loosens up. Just did mine works like new.

Some gravel has gone down the latch holes on each side. Take the tailgate out and place it on something that won't scratch it like an old blanket. Turn it upside down each way and gently tape on it with your hand to dislodge the gravel while operating the latch.

I had that problem, I removed the screws holding it together, then pulled it open as much as I could from the middle and hold it with a piece of 4x6 so I could access the left side, with a small screw driver, I compered the both sides, to see what was the difference and after a few tries, finally it opened. I cleaned it with a brush and cleaner, it was very dirty... that worked for me. Maria

Once you manage to get it out. clean it, oil it if possible. Put it back then test again.

try to spray some lubricant on the latches and let sit for awhile and try opening if those are working push up against the tail gate and open.if it has a lock make sure it isnt engaged just some things to try i hope this helps
