If you can find the resevoir for the power steering, which is supposed to be located (Driver's side in front of the engine near the ground. See that canister in front of the engine with the screw top? i had to look that up) you will be able to tell by looking at it how much is in there. usually there are some lines indicating what level you are at.

as for the transmission fluid, locate the dipstick It will be located toward the back of the engine compartment. It may be a different color than the motor oil dipstick. The transmission fluid dipstick may even have a picture or words on it. A telltale sign is that the tube the dipstick fits in is smaller than the motor oil tube.(had to look that one up as well) when you pull it out, it too will visually tell you what level you are, full, low or none. pull it out and wipe off the stick, then replace it making sure it fits all the way otherwise you won't get a correct reading. if you need to add some your owners manuel should tell you the exact kind you need if you don't have one, there should be a plate on the side of the transmission.

hope this helps

Which parts should I replace when servicing my BMW

Do you mean tune-up parts or something else? Is there anything wrong with your 318ti at the moment? If just tune-up parts, I would take a look at your spark plugs and change them if they haven't done in the last 30K miles or so. Also check your ignition coils while you're changing the plugs. Make sure you use the correct plugs and use cooper plugs such as, NGK and make sure they are correctly gaped. I would also change out the air filter, fuel filter as well. As for fluid, I would check the rear differential and flush it out if that haven't been done for the last 30-60K miles or so. I would also take a closer look at the serpentine belts, and all of the vacuum hoses and replace them if you find them hard and cracked.

The last thing is, depending on if you have an automatic or manual transmission, I would flush the fluid if you haven't done that at the last 30K miles or so. I use Redline products for manual and automatic transmission fluid as well as the rear differential.

Best of luck.

Bmw compact s reg. noisy when turning steering

Look inside the reservoir while the car is running and see if it is low. If it is turn the car off and add power steering fluid. You can purchase at a gas station or parts house. Some people use transmission fluid but it is not a good Idea because it can cetch on fire if you have leak in your power steering system. You can look for leaks when you have someone steer the car fom side to side. Make sure you turn the wheel tight so the whinng is at it's loudest. Check your power steering hoses and rack and pinion, etc. Hope this helps leave a comment.

What power steering fluid do I use in my 1996 BMW 318is?

NO, NO, No, Use regular ATF in the car, this is what it was designed for, read the manual if you still have it. If you start using power steering fluid with the atf the came in the car it will eventually turn into a mud type liquid and sooner than later fail...If you have done this you will need to drain the fluid out replace with fresh atf, run the system in for a quick 15-20 min drive then drain and refill again...

What kind of power steering fluid should I use for 2002 BMW 325 CI

I know E46's use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluids) for their power-steering systems. BMW Reccomends to use a common Dextron III / Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid.
