First check the belt powering it isn't slack or slipping. Belts often 'squeal' when they are loose.
With the engine OFF You should be able to twist the belt almost half a turn. You can check the alternator yourself using a Multimeter? You can buy basic multimeters for about $15.
Set it to V, (volts). Start the engine and put the Red lead onto the positive (+) terminal of the battery and the Black one onto the negative (-) terminal and read the number on the meter. If the Alternator is working correctly the number should be around 14 volts. If it is 12 or lower the alternator is faulty. Easiest method is to replace the whole thing.
A garage will use this same method but they might charge for the service.

Where is the alternator fuse in a 2008 dodge avenger?

What size engine ? Could have came with three different one's ! 2.4 , 2.7 , 3.5 L Has a fusible link , do you know what that is ? The heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator should have battery voltage . Check it with a volt meter , easier then checking at the starter , because the wire comes from the main power feed from starter . This charging system is computer controlled , your best bet , take it to a qualified repair . How to test an alternator Chrysler Dodge Jeep

What's wrong with my 2008 Nissan maxima when both brake and battery lights are both on and it wont accelerate above 40 mph?

That means that alternator is about to stop operating and has already stopped charging the battery. Your alternatives are to change it for a rebuilt, remanufactured or new alternator OR have your current one rebuilt.

Car will not start or turn over only makes a clicking sound

You have a weak battery and it needs to be charged. It may also need to be replaced if it will not hold a charge. I would recommend checking the alternator voltage. The alternator may not have enough output voltage and therefore the battery is not being charged up. The alternator should have a voltage of about 14.2-14.4 volts, any less and the alternator should be replaced.

2008 avenger,4cyl Engine rattles, oil change did not help. It also seemed to be shifting later so did a tune up and had the trans. flushed. 100000 so it was time. Motor almost seems to howl, but is running...

My engine rattled and i had the same things done, the oil change and tune up because i had 83000 miles. That didn't fix the problem and after spending $120 the mechanic said it was the alternator because there was some build up on the side of it which he said is a way to figure out if its going bad or not. Anyway this cost me almost $700 to fix now the rattling noise is gone and all is good. The mechanic said that it was ok to continue driving the car but if the alternator went completely out be prepaid to have it towed once your battery charge is gone.
Just a 2008 Dodge Avenger owner for over 3years now.
