Brakes are not working properly on my 199 mazda 626. when braking I can have the brake pedal pressed all the way down hard with little response. checked the brake fluid and its fine. brake pads look good as well. no squealing or noise when braking, just not braking well at all.

With the engine off, depress the brake pedal about 6 times, all the way up and down. While holding the hard pedal down, start the engine, and if the booster is working properly, the pedal will fade down a little bit.
sounds like one of the bleeder nipples wasn't tightened properly. There's a cool little bleeder kit that has a blocker ball in it so it doesn't allow any air back into the brake line when you go pump the brake pedal until you tighten the nipple.
I know the answer to this. I just fixed my in laws 1999 626 with your exact problem. Power comes through the brake switch, and into what they call a "joint box". Basically this joint box is the back side of your fuse box where all the connectors go. Most likely you have a bad box, or connection at the box. It is the only other thing between your brake switch and rear brake lights.
My brake lights dont work when i press the brake pedal. i have checked the bulbs, fuse and replaced the brake switch. still not working. what should i do?
The brake light switch is located behind the brake pedal. To replace the brake light switch, first disconnect wire couplink ,next unscrew the switch from behind the bracket. You will see a locknut holding it in place.Remove the lock nut and the brake light switch will come out easily. After replacing the brake light switch make sure that when the break pedal is in released position that the buton on the switch is pressed in. you may have to ajust the switch position to achieve this goal.Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
If you can feel the pedal pulsating and the light turns on the Abs is doin its job. if you want a better stop you could try a brake pad upgrade to ceramic pads and for even more stoping power add an after market drilled and sloted rotors.
Is the fuse for the brake lights OK? Check for power to the brake light switch at the brake pedal and for power coming from it with brake pedal depressed.
Sounds like it is your brake light switch which is located on the brake pedal itself. Should cost around $20 at autozone and is pretty easy to change out yourself. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!
