With the engine off, depress the brake pedal about 6 times, all the way up and down. While holding the hard pedal down, start the engine, and if the booster is working properly, the pedal will fade down a little bit.

check under dash for a leaky vaccum switch. if booster was faulty brake pedal would be very hard to depress.

SOURCE: where do you add brake fluid

Please don't add brake fluid to the engine, you'll ruin it. Brake fluid is added to the Brake Master Cylinder.

Hood open, viewing your Jeep from the front, (Facing the windshield)
The Brake Master Cylinder is on the upper right, mounted fairly close under the windshield.
(If you have Power Brakes it is mounted on a Power Booster. If you do not have power brakes it is mounted directly to the firewall)

This link below will show you what it looks like,

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsProduct.jsp?skuDescription=Fenco+New+/+Master+Cylinder+%28Brake+System%29&categoryDisplayName=&fromString=&itemIdentifier=248428_56045_0_3482&productId=248428&sortType=&parentId=44-0&filterByKeyWord=&isSearchByPartNumber=&navValue=14400007&categoryNValue=14499999&fromWhere=&itemId=7-0&displayName=Master+Cylinder+%28Brake+System%29&store=1623&searchText=&brandName=Fenco+New

This link shows what the brake master cylinder looks like, not installed. You are looking at the back view of it.
From the mounting flange that has a hole on each side, to the tip of that rod sticking out, is a view you will not see.

The photo is to illustrate the top cover, and the wire looking device that holds the cover on.

Viewing the Jeep from the front, the wire device you see is moved to the ->Right.
A common tool used to move it would be a sturdy flat tip screwdriver.
It is very stiff to move, but be sure you are trying to move it the correct direction.

When you go to fill the master cylinder the proper level for the brake fluid is one-eighth inch below the rim edge. (1/8th inch)

You will see two compartments. You will also see that the master cylinder sits at an angle. It's angled toward the back. The back edge of each compartment's rim edge, is what you use to judge the brake fluid level. (1/8th inch below that edge)

The problem is not the booster, the job of the booster is to make braking easier. If the booster went out the brakes would be hard to press.
Your soft pedal is likely due to air in the brake lines. Bleed the brakes and go from there.

2006 toyota landcruiser brake goes limp, pedal goes soft

Replace your master cylinder. It is leaking out of the back of the master cylinder and into the booster. If you unbolt the master and carefully look into the booster, chances are you will see brake fluid. Replace it, bleed the entire system, and enjoy your truck again.

Replace my master cylinder and booster

ok to replace it is preety straight foward..the master cylinder is built onto the booter (its where u put the brake fluid)

  • locate master cylinder and booster..
  • remove hoses and connections (remember where everything came from) take pics if you have to
  • unbolt and remove both cylinder and booster
  • bolt up new booster and cylinder
  • connect hoses and other connections..
  • fill with fluid.
now you have to bleed your brake lines

locate brake line on front wheel (its in the back,, cant miss it)
slacken one of the valves or remove the hose..
plug line with finger
pump brake a few times until it gets hatd and hold it down ,, release line brake will get soft
repeat a few times ,connect back line.

2007 Jetta keeps losing brake fluid. 2 dealerships have looked at it and no one has an answer. No evidence of leaking.

INFO:
This vehicle is NOT safe to operate.
The Brake fluid is leaking on to the back side of your floor board carpet OR it is filling up the Brake booster.

RECOMENDATION:
Replace brake master cylinder.

INSPECT:
1. To inspect pull up the carpet from behind the brake peddle you should see that paint is pealing off of the fire wall and you may even see this from under the hood under the master cylinder.
2. A little more difficult but it is possible that brake fluid is filling the brake vacuum booster and may require removal to see if it is. IF fluid is entering the booster it will need to be replaced.

Hope this tip helps.

Install new brake pads and rotors all 4 wheels. Replaced front 2 calipers. Bled brakes. New clean fluid coming out. pedal is still soft and goes to floor. 200 Seebring.

Are you losing any Brake Fluid? Is it visible anywhere at the four wheels? Is it visible anywhere else?
The Master Cylinder may be defective. When you bled the Brakes did you maintain proper Brake Fluid Level in the Master Cylinder? If you didn't: and air entered into the Master Cylinder there maybe air within in the system in the Master Cylinder. You can bleed the Master Cylinder by removing the brake lines, adding more fluid, pumping the brakes, bleeding the air out of the system.
Are you losing Brake Fluid and can't find a noticeable leak? Then there is a good posibility that the rear seal in the Master Cylinder is leaking and the Fluid is going into the Brake Booster - which is the large wheel shaped drum located on the fire wall. In this case both the Brake Booster and the Master Cylinder will have to be removed and replaced. The Booster contains seals that Brake Fluid is very caustic to and will ruin these seals- causing future failures.
If no Brake Fluid is lost, no leak found: Check the Brake Booster Vacuum Advance. This should be connected to the outside of the Booster, attached to a hose, with the hose going to the engine. Check to see if this is working properly. Replace if needed.
