What would cause a 98 sonoma to crank but not start

Try replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor located on the lower front of the motor behind the crank pulley.

The sensors are somewhat common to create an open circuit when they heat up, but work again when the coil inside of it cools down.

Where is crank sensor

If you go to Google and type in "2002 GMC Yukon XL Crankshaft Position Sensor"...click enter...then look for the tab that says "images". The first image I found shows the location of the CPS. If you're not able to view the image, the sensor is located on the lower right rear of the engine block.

Good luck!

1996 Sonoma where's the crank shaft sensor

The crank sensor bolts into the front timing cover right underneath the crank pulley. If you look at the vehicle from underneath, you'll be able to see it... very common failure

02 gmc sonoma want crank.has new battery,new fuel filter,and two new 02 sensors.any suggestions

k, not cranking, is the battery good, if yes you could try to jump the starter and see if it cranks, if not you could pull it and have it tested. If the starter is good, might be the ignition switch.
