The usual cause of this is the lock has closed or jammed for some reason. You should be able to re-open the lock with the key or the lever inside the car. You should be able to see the lock mechanism is open.
The mechanism hooks on to the loop on the trunk edge. This loop is adjustable, and may have worked loose.
Lastly, all the above assumes that you have not had a rear end collision or similar damage.

Well generally and very basically, ya, unplug the wires from Alternator then remove the bolts that attach it, remove the drive belt, Then, reinstall the new Alternator, then put belt on.. retighten the bolts.. reattach the Wires.. ya should be good to go. Check Check Check.
NB: Take note of how "Tight" the belt drive is and try to replicate that tension when finished.

The best way is to make sure you give the correct information IE: yr, make, engine size, and VIN. That will ensure the correct trans. As far as knowing if it is a good trans, the best advise I can give is to make sure it is a reputable parts dealer, and make sure it is a low mileage trans (if used), make sure they offer a warranty, and have them or yourself pull the pan to inspect it for metal shavings.
