The acutator in the latch assembly is not strong enough or is frozen you will most likley need to replace latch assembly to solve problem they are known to go bad on both the doors and the trunk and are a one piece unit with no serviceable parts

Testimonial: "I stated I replaced the lock, latch assembly, with a new one from GM can only gain access with emergency pull"

  • sycotic09 Mar 19, 2017

Are u saying the latch is making noise or just the relay

  • sycotic09 Mar 19, 2017

If its not a noise at the latch you need to find out the power and ground at the switch. The method that Jeff put in his description of the relay should work.

You hear relay clicking where on the vehicle ?
Rear Compartment Lid Release System Components
• Body control module (BCM)
• Remote control door lock receiver
• Interior rear compartment lid release switch
• Exterior rear compartment lid release switch
• Rear compartment lid release actuator
• Trunk release relay

Rear Compartment Lid Release Operation
The interior rear compartment lid release switch receives a signal from the driver door switch assembly (DDSA). When the interior rear compartment lid release switch is activated, the signal circuit is pulled to ground. The DDSA interprets this and sends a GMLAN serial data message to the body control module (BCM) requesting the rear compartment lid be released. The BCM responds by applying battery voltage to the trunk release relay control circuit which energizes the TRUNK RELES relay. The trunk release relay is supplied with battery voltage at all times. With the relay coil energized, the relay switch contacts close allowing battery voltage to flow to the rear compartment lid release actuator causing the rear compartment lid to release. The rear compartment lid release actuator is permanently grounded at G402.
The exterior rear compartment lid release switch receives a signal from the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR). When the exterior rear compartment lid release switch is activated, the signal circuit is pulled to ground. The RCDLR interprets this and sends a GMLAN serial data message to the body control module (BCM) requesting the rear compartment lid be released. The exterior rear compartment lid release switch is permanently grounded at G401.

Trunk Release Inoperative !

Having a factory scan tool makes diagnosing this a lot easier .

Circuit/System Verification
Ignition ON, command the Trunk Release with a scan tool. The rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch is inoperative, refer to Rear Compartment Lid Malfunction.
Command the trunk release by using the interior trunk release switch. The rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not release, refer to Interior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
Command the trunk release by using the exterior rear compartment lid release switch. The rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not release, refer to Exterior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
Circuit/System Testing
Rear Compartment Lid Release Malfunction
Ignition OFF, disconnect the TRUNK/RELSE relay.
Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 85 and ground.
? If greater than the specified range, test for an open/high resistance.
Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 30 and ground.
? If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 87 and ground.
? If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the TRUNK/RELSE fuse is open, test the control circuit terminal 30 for a short to ground.
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid latch.
Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.
? If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
Connect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid latch.
Ignition ON, connect a 15A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal 87 and the control circuit terminal 30. Verify the rear compartment lid latch is activated.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not activate, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear compartment lid latch.
Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 86 and ground.
Command the trunk release ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
? If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
? If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
If all circuits test normal, test or replace the TRUNK/RELSE relay.

the relay in trunk compartment clicks when fob or door switch is operated. i also have checked the fuse in trunk

  • Jeff Armer Mar 19, 2017

Do you know how a relay works ? You could jump power direct to lock actuator , just because a relay clicks doesn't mean it's good . Swap that relay with another one . see if that works

2008 Cadillac CTS push button to open trunk sometimes works

Do you know anything about automotive electronic's ? The trunk release is controlled by electronic control modules . Having the vehicle check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's should be the first step in the diagnostic procedure . Then reading how it work's !
Factory service repair info.

The trunk release relay is located in the rear fuse box located under the back seat.

Can not open trunk on a pontiac soltice. No clicking sound from remote or switch in glove box fuses are ok

The rear compartment lid release system consists of the following components:
• Body control module (BCM)
• Folding top cover actuator
• GMLAN serial data link
• Keyless entry transmitter
• Rear compartment lid ajar switch
• Rear compartment lid release actuator
• Rear compartment lid release switch
• Remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR)
• Trunk fuses
• Trunk release relay

Rear Compartment Lid Release System Operation
The rear compartment lid can be released by operating the rear compartment lid release switch or pressing the rear compartment lid release button on the keyless entry transmitter. When the rear compartment lid release switch is operated, the rear compartment lid release switch signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is switched to ground. The BCM receives the rear compartment lid release switch input and applies ground to the trunk release relay control circuit. This energizes the trunk release relay coil, closing the switch side contacts, allowing battery voltage to be applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator and folding top cover actuator, releasing the buttresses and opening the rear compartment lid. Ground for the rear compartment lid release switch is provided at G300. The rear compartment lid ajar switch, rear compartment lid release actuator, and folding top cover actuator are provided ground at G301. The rear compartment lid will not release until the vehicle speed is zero and in park.

Do you know what DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are ?
DTC B3265 01 : Trunk Relay Output Short to Battery
DTC B3265 06 : Trunk Relay Output Short to Ground or Open

Do you know what a relay is an how it works ? TRUNK release relay located in the underhood fuse / relay box.

My remote is bad and the button on the door of my 2008 saturn aura xr will not open the trunk

How about a key ?

Luggage Compartment Description and Operation (Sedan)
Rear Compartment Lid Release
The rear compartment lid can be released in one of three ways:
• Inserting the key into the key lock cylinder, if equipped
• Operating the rear compartment lid release switch
• Using the keyless entry fob
To operate rear compartment lid with the rear compartment lid release switch or with the rear compartment release button on the key fob, the gear selector may be in any position, but vehicle speed must equal 0 for the rear compartment lid to release.
When the rear compartment lid release switch is pushed, the rear compartment lid release signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is grounded. BCM then grounds the coil side of the trunk release relay through the trunk release relay control circuit. With this voltage is applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator, opening the rear compartment.

do you know how to do electrical testing ?

Circuit/System Verification
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Trunk Release Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
? If the parameter does not change, refer to Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
Command the trunk release with a scan tool, the rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not release, refer to Rear Compartment Lid Latch Malfunction

You may want to take it to a repair shop .

Trunk Lid Release Switch on 2009 cts not working

Does it make any noise when you attempt to unlock it? if so it could just need you to realign the latch. but if you hear no sound at all then its electrical and I would check the fuse next. If fuse is good put a multimeter on the solenoid then to the ground and try to unlock it to make sure you are getting power to the solenoid. If you are getting power its the solenoid that need replacement. WebRepcurrentVotenoRatingnoWeight

Trunk will not release with key remote but i hear click noise from fuse block on passenger side dash i have no manual so i dont know what fuse operates what also never have found any other trunck release...

If the actuator mechanism is functioning (you hear the click) the next step is to see if the cable is connected to the latch. Open your trunk and press the button - watch what happens. You may have to manually 'lock' the trunk with the trunk lid open to observe the action. You can always unlock this latch with your key if necessary.

Let me know what happens ... good luck

2004 cts cadillac trunk will not open with remote or with button on drivers door.

if you here a clicking sound when you push the remote or the drivers button then the solenoid and fuse are probably o.k. lubricate the trunk lid catch and operate the latch a few times, also check the tension on the trunk itself , it should lift up part of the way by itself, if not 1. lubricate the hinges and move trunk lid up and down. if still bad 2. if it has a tension rod adjust the rod to a stronger setting if it has gas shocks, 3.replace shocks. if no click and fuse is good solenoid may be bad
