you need to put a chevy alternator with a built in regulator on it.
You need a 3 wire alternator. Two wires go to the battery and one wire goes to anything connected to the ignition switch.

check the alternator fuse and grounding

it is part of the alternator actually on a lucas unit, a small black box bolted to the rear of the alternator.
You may have a faulty ignition switch or a corroded engine earth cable causing the alternator not to reach charging voltage.

Doesn't have an external regulator, If battery is reasonably fully charged it doesn't need 25A + of a charge . Put on your rear window de-mister and headlights and check voltage before and during test !
Good Luck
SOURCE: the new alternator will not
I would check fuses and relays first..Check the voltage coming off the alternator on the big red wire,,instead of across the battery..Some cars still use a fusible link..You would no that if you have charging voltage at your alternator but not at the battery..Should be 14.0 volts or close to it..with no load
