It sounds like several potential problems are going on right now, all related to the shift interlock. The shift interlock is the gatekeeper of the transmission and ignition systems. If it is working correctly, then when you press the start putton a signal is supposed to be sent by the ignition control module to the ignition button, releasing the interlock so that you can press in the button and the car starts.
Without that vital signal, though, you car will just sit there, just a nice-looking pile of steel, aluminum, hoses, belts, pullies, wheels, tires, lights, body and engine. It won't do anything, though, not without the signal.
It will neither release the steering lock nor the gearbox or gearshift collector. That's the bad news, the worse news is that the vehicle has to be hooked to the nearest service facility where the defective interlock and/or related circuitry can be swapped out. That's the good thing about electronics it is "plug-in-plug-out" in many areas of today's car. The issue is getting it to the right shop so it can be repaired.
Depending on the local labor rates (around here they are about $143 per hour at dealerships and in the mid-$90 to about $115 at independent shops) and the fact that this job could be billed out at, two-and-a-half hours, plus parts you are looking at a bill of from $255 to $380.
