My 98 dodge neon's speedometer started jumping up
Hi. Look like your charging system is down. Check battery first, alternator fuses relay responsible for charging. Your battery doesn't have or hold voltage and air bags are first in the system as good indication of power lose unless is actual air bag fault
Dodge Neon 2001
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.
What would make the fans not come on and cool the radiator?
Hello Anonymous,
Before replacing the fan motor try hot wiring it to see if the motor will run. Disconnect the two wire connector at the fan motor and run two jumper wires from the battery. If you get the polarity backwards the fan will still run, just backwards... but it will answer the question of whether or not the motor is bad. If the motor runs on the hot wire setup, it's good and the problem lies somewhere else like the radiator fan relay.
This relay is located near the driver's side front wheel well. Go under the car and find the wires leading to the radiator fan on the drivers side. Trace them back and you will see they go to a waffer shaped solid state relay bolted to the car near the wheel well. It measures about 1 1/2 inches across and is about 1/4 inch thick.
Severe corrosion or heat damage to the aluminum mounting bracket may be the culprit. .
Stalls after 15 miles alternator light on
1. Start your vehicle
2. while running, disconnect the red battery cable from the battery.
3. If it dies, it is your alternator
4. If it continues to run then it will be your battery.
Why does it seem as though my battery is completely dead but it isn't?
A bad cell could have too much internal resistance when the battery has to draw many amps to turn starter over. Put headlights on then hit the starter, if the headlights go off, the battery is bad or a connection at the battery cable or ground cable is dirty.
If you have a voltmeter, attach to battery and notice voltage of ~12v or greater, then hit starter, if battery is bad, the voltage will go from ~12v to under 9v and result is starter won't turn over the engine.
