There is a base idle speed set at the factory . From sensor inputs the PCM - engine computer controls idle speed in all conditions . There is nothing for you to change idle speed, you shouldn't even try . Will cause PCM to turn on the check engine light ,that you won't be able to turn off . If your having idle problems your best bet have a qualified repair shop check scan data . 007 Idle Speed Problems Scan Data for Idle
Warm diesels should idle low. Some of them 800-900 revs.
At cold, they should have a fast idle, some 1100 revs.
look if your engine has a cylindrical device, with a bowden cable to the diesel distibutor pump. This will be your coldstart device, responsible for idle revs.
Are you running the recommended oil grade? As the injection system is operated by engine oil pressure using the wrong oil grade can prevent your car from starting, running smooth or hard starting! Ideally they require a 5W30 oil grade. Idle speed is controlled by the engine control unit! It's a common rail diesel engine so there's nothing to adjust! The Camshaft position sensor could also possibly be intermittently faulting causing similar symptoms! It's located on the front of the cambelt cover(gray coloured sensor)
Nothing to fix friend. See, in diesel, when cold, there is an electric plunger on the throttle that speeds the idle a bit till warm up. Connected to that same wire is the cold start/temperature sensor. When cold/cool this sensor will excite the plunger to speed the idle, and put more fuel into the engine making the smoke you see, until warm up is reached and the sensor shuts down. You really don't have a repair needed friend.
DOES THE ENGINE MIL WARNING LIGHT COME ON? WITH OUT MORE INFO YOU NEED TO CHECK MOTOR ON A CODE READER FOR STORED FAULTS, CHECK ALL AIR LINES TO EMMISION CONTROL, , SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE GONE INTO SAFE MODE, A SPLIT OR LEAKING PIPE ON THE INTERCOOLER IS A COMON FAULT ON THESE, IF YOU SWITCH ENGINE OF AND BACK ON QUICKLY WITH MOTOR RUNNING WITH OUT STALLING MOTOR AND IT CLEARS THEN IT IS PROBERLY THE SAFE MODE CUTING IN MEANING A FAULT HAS BEEN SEEN BY PCM
