I have a 96 dodge ram van 2500....my brakes are not releasing properly....or sometimes the pedal will slowly go further down....I believe it is the Master Cylinder, but I am unsure....yesterday the back brakes locked briefly while sitting at the light and then under acceleration they started to release.. any tips?

When truckis not running, brake booster is not functioning and therefor the pedal goes down further and the brake switch functions. When running and booster is working pedal does not go down so far and light switch is not released enough to work. Adjust light switch at brake pedal.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start engine).
2. Press and release the brake pedal two times.
3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly two times within 10 seconds and hold it to the floor the second time.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position and then let up on the accelerator pedal.
Make sure you're not letting up on the accelerator pedal before turning the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
that's odd ,try disconnecting the vacuum hose at the booster chamber and see if they release, had a truck do that once, the master cyl.seal at the booster failed and the brakes were applied.
check brake light switch on brake pedal could have pushed out of its scket or its possibly bad .try holding brake pedal down and pushing brake light switch in some then release brake pedal and check to see if lights go out
if you talking brakes not clutch. you can pump the brakes all day long and they don't build pressure and you not losing fluids the master is out. now if you pump them up and they are rock hard your hydrabooster is out.now if your mechanically incline you can order a master cylinder rebuild kit for like 20-30 bucks which is basically orings from local parts store and only tools you need are snapring pliers. or you can change the master ,bench bleed it first then bleed out the rr,lr,rf,lf in that order.hope i help.all under 100 bucks
There are 2 causes, 1.caliper slides are in need of servicing/lube.2, caliper(s) piston(s) need to be serviced/cleaned. Recommend replacement of both calipers, if either doesn't work.
Excessive runout or wobble in a disc (Rotor) can increase pedal travel due to piston knockback and increase piston seal wear due to necessity of caliper to follow disc wobble.
Thickness variation in a disc can also result in pedal pulsation, chatter and surge due to variation in brake output when disc section is uneven. Dishing or distortion can be caused by extreme heat and abuse of the brakes. Hope this helps, Good luck.
You Must determine that Master Cylinder is NOT LEAKING into the Brake BOOSTER this is a Leak that CANNOT be Detected Easyly, If not Rear Brake SHOES Worn OUT Can CAUSE LOW Brake Pedal Problem
