Buy replacement switch first because you going to be working under the dashboard in an upside down position. Disconnect battery. This is important. Next crawl under dashboard so you can see or feel wires from ignition switch, remove them slowly and one at a time. Switch comes out after the clip in the back is removed. Now that you have it out, Take the new one and put it in with clip, follow other steps in reverse. A local repair shop will do the job for a small but worth while charge

Usually this can be temporarily solved with a shot of graphite lubricant into the key hole and moving the steering wheel side to side while turning the key. But, in the end, the ignition cylinder is wearing out and will eventually need replacing.

Turn your steering wheel to allow the ignition to fully unlock while turning the key.

take off the cover on the top and bottom of the steering column just behind the wheel. pop the tilt lever out simply just by grabbing it and give it a good tug. then once you have the new switch and you get in there your going to need an inverted torx socket to remove the small bolts that hold the switch to the column. do not move the gear on the new switch make sure it lines up exactly as the old one did!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not much fun. You have to take the steering wheel and airbag loose, then remove some bolts with round heads to get to the switch.

Not an easy job. Steering wheel has to be pulled, and security screws with no heads.

How do i replace the ignition switch on a 99 saturn sl1?

I would refer you to a Chilton or Haynes or Dealer service manual. I looked on my online resource but it was incomplete as far as replacing the ignition switch on the saturn sl1.

Sorry about that.

Is it hard to replace the steering column?1997 Saturn SL1.

it is not really hard but make sure the ignition switch and security system will still work if you relplace it, if it has a security light in the dash when you open the door, it is harder, if it doesn't then you can do it...
remove all bottom plastic panels, all wiring connections, disconnect the yoke on the engine side of the compartment on the bottom, there are two or 4 big screws holding the column up, loosen them from the bottom, and follow steps, make sure battery is disconnected and air bag fuse is removed...this is just a general instruction.

1997 SL1 Saturn will not turn. lights air signals work. car will not start.starter was checked it was good, the battery was checked it was good as well.

Check the continuity of your power cables leading from the battery to the starter as well as the lines from the ignition switch. You could have a faulty connection or a bad switch.

Key is stuck in ignition of 1997 saturn sl1, will not turn.

I saw a similar post with similar problem with another Saturn. The dealer told him it was a bad battery. My guess here is it is a bad Ignition. However, just to appease the dealer side, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and connect the jumper cable to the negative cable and positive cable. If it was the battery causing the problem the key should come right out. My guess is you need to replace the ignition as one or more of the tumblers is not releasing as it should.
