Unplug the connector running to the back of the headlamp bulb. Remove the rubber ring that is on the back of the headlamp. It just pulls off. After the rubber is removed, you will see the clip to release the bulb.

Remove the headlight assembly. Just remove the 3 bolts with a 10 mm socket and pull it out so you can disconect the wire harness. After that pull the whole assembly out and unscrew the bulb cover. The bulb is held in with a spring clip.

When you replace headlights in today's cars, DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS OF THE BULB!. Handle the bulb only with the packing material the bulb ships in, or with a clean dry cloth. The oils in your skin will cause premature failure of the bulb.
Also, check the sockets (car side) carefully to make sure they are not burned.

bulb, igniter, or module, in order of likelihood and cost.
My bulb was out, so had a bulb put in, but still out. Had an off-duty BMW tech do it.
HOWEVER, if you have the HID Xenon headlight option, you can get shocked to death (yes, death) if you touch the wrong things together.
It's in the owner's manual -- turn wheels in or out, on front inside of wheel well is a cover that has small screws holding it in. The there's a plastic cove that snaps off and, walla, you're at the back of the light. It just twists in and out.
Don't touch the new bulb (particularly if it's a Xenon).
I'd pay to get it done.

Actually there are two little black tabs on top of each headlight housing and you simply have to pull them up to release the whole headlamp.
Then follow the rest of emissionwiz's solution.
