The battery died on my Toyota and I can't get the hood opened to recharge it. There's tension on the wire below the dashboard, yet the hood won't open. Any ideas?
If it has been awhile since you have been under the hood, the cable may be rustd and not moving to open the latch. The latch iself may be stuck and you can try lightly tapping either side of the hood to pop it loose.

Hi, Standing in front of your Corolla with the hood open ,the starter is located right below the intake manifold(curvy tube like looking ) This is in the center of the engine. A plastic water guard underneath the car prevents you from seeing the starter from below. That water shield will need to be removed to access the starter. Wayne
Have one person pull on the latch inside and the other person pull up on the hood (sometimes depending may have to use a thin screwdriver to pry up carefully not to chip the paint). Once open lube the hood latch under the hood with wd-40. Make sure the latch inside is still connected to the wire.
You need to remove the black plastic mud guard from under the bumper, use a 10 or 12 mm socket with extention to reach the hood latch from under the car, un bolt the latch and lift the hood up to repair. Hope this helps.
There is a rachet right below the hood that you can reach from radiator grill. Take a long thin screw driver, reach it and turn that rachet. You will hear the "click" sound and the hood will pop open.
You may need to recharge your AC. The AC clutch relay seems to be a high failure item for this car. You can test by swapping relays under the hood. The AC clutch relay is located next to the negative battery post in the fuse box under the hood on the driver's side fender. It is the smaller relay marked "M/G CLT". This is available from Rockauto.com, $11.
the release lever is just to the right of center.
you have to push the hood down slightly to release the pressure or it will not open.you need to make a hook out of a nail thick piece of wire to get under the latch and push it up at the same time you put some downward pressure on the hood.a bent screwdriver will work fine as a pry tool as well
Someone just successfully helped me with a similar problem. IF the cable is Not broken, ie: still taunt when one pulls the hood release lever in the car, then the latch under the hood is simply stuck. Try this. Have someone bounce/press down on the front center of the hood where the latch is located to relieve spring tension. At the same time have someone pull the Hood Release lever inside the car. This may pop open the front hood. Then after the hood opens spray WD40 on the hood latch to rid the rust which likely is the cause of the problem. BTW...don't know what you mean about the Oil Light comes on. You don't need the engine turned on to open up the front hood, at least not on my model (2door sedan).
