Car hesitant to start then cuts out while driving

Was having trouble getting the car started. Once started and runs for a bit (10 mins or so) it cuts out and won't restart for a while. It cut out while driving on the highway. Also, the exhaust is emitting an odd smell, definitely some type of burning? Any thioughts?

keep the fuel tank at least half full.....it may helps cool the pump

The service light is a reminder for you to have the car serviced, it can be reset, and it will come on again in 5,000 miles or so.

The overdrive light may be caused by the wiring to the overdrive solenoid on the transmission, or the relay. Just be sure the wiring is ok before replacing the relay, or you can damage the new relay.

Could be fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter.

agree, idle control valve is a stretch. I would check the EGR valve for proper operation and clean the hoses if they are dirty. If not that, maybe the MAP sensor is off. Does it cut out when you open the throttle or even when you just stop at the intersection?

Well the diesel effect is from the idle speed being too high or a buildup of carbon inside the engine acting as replacement spark plugs.
Can you use starting fluid to find out if the cutting out is from lack of fuel ?

You should check for trouble codes. Use an OBD II code reader or scanner. Possible that a new coolant temperature sensor may cure it, but that's just a guess, just like guessing the Intake Air Temperature sensor might be the problem...Have the car scanned for trouble codes first.

Have you had the engine scanned for trouble codes? You didn't say anything about a check engine light, but I think the computer may have some stored trouble codes that would have something to do with the problem.

Car shuts off when it gets hot
your ignition coil are going bad, they need to be replaced. once the car gets hot the circuit shut down the car when hot. once they cool your riding again until they get hot. thats your problem. Good Luck

if it shuts off after running for a while and will not restart for about 10 min,a bad crank sensor will cause this. abad crank sensor will make car shut off and not restart for about 10 min. put a scanner on to make sure. a check engine light does not allways come on. if you do not have a scanner, any auto parts store will scan it for free.
