I would replace the starter drive assembly.

If you are getting vacuum I would check the CAD (Center axle disconnect). You may want to go to a posi-Lok cable actuator if you're going to replace the vacuum actuator, better performance and you know it's going to engage!

does it roll over or is there a clicking noise, you got power?

Check the front U-Joints, sounds like one is worn out.

check your solenoid in transmission its for shifting gears try that first

Chk. wheel bearings and axel cv joints, and also steering componets and ball joints. Chk. rearend grease.

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

you more than likely need new U-joints, im assuming its four-wheel-drive.
