Per operators guide
wiggle steering if key will not go off.
wiggle shifter.
both.
if this is no cure the key may be worn out.
get a new key , if you finally get it out. do not copy the old POS worn out key. that 2x worse that.

Battery fully charged, car wont start, cant remove key, 2004 cadillac cts

There is a magnetic switch on the 'park' position. The car only starts or releases the key in 'park' is enabled. Maybe this switch is not working! Try to replace it!

Key wont turn over in my 1999 jeep cherokee sport seems like it is locked. The lights come on and dinging at the door.

If the key is seemingly mysteriously prevented from being twisted to the "Start" position in the ignition, it is probably due to the transmission not being fully in "Park" (or in neutral or clutch fully depressed for a standard transmission).

The ignition switch is will move to start or not turn the starter when it is not in the correct position. Pull the shifter fully into the Park position (or in the case of a standard transmission - out of gear & press the clutch to the floor). It may be difficult to do this if you are parked on a hill or if there is some other issue with the linkage between the shifter and transmission. In any case, the shifter should click into position when fully in park. If the car has a lot of miles on it - the switch and linkage may be worn - and you'll have to "jiggle" the shifter back and forth to find the spot that allows the starter to turn.

It may also be a dead battery. The lights and chime require significantly less power than starting the engine does. Turn on the high beam headlights, air conditioner and set the blower fan to high. Then tap the horn. If your car can't do all this at once - the battery could be ready for replacement. Try to get a booster or jump start.

I hope this helps - good luck!

My 2000 grand prix needs the key reprogramed. I lost the original key and now the new one wont program on its own.

Make sure you have the right type of ignition keys, there should be a stamp on the keys "PK3" which is the right ignition keys you need to have for your passlock system.

Auto Relearn:
Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

Insure that the battery is fully charged.
Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

You may have to get somebody with a scan tool to reset the computer codes to make this work.

Thank oyu for using fixya and good luck

I am unable to turn the key in the ignition of my 87 Mercury Grand Marquis. The steering wheel is not locked. I think the tumblers are miss aligned. I bought a new Lock cylinder but can't get out the old...

Make sure the gear selector is fully in the park position. If it is not, you will not be able to turn the key to the position that locks the steering. This is by design, so that if someone has to turn the key off because of a runaway engine, they don't inadvertently lock the steering.

When i put the key in the ignition the car beeps but it wont let me turn the key at all..

Try rocking the steering wheel back and forth, if the wheel was turned too sharp when the car was shut off the steering lock is putting too much pressure on the tumbler for the key to turn. If that doesn't work you will have to have the key and tumbler replaced.
