Check Engine light on 1998 BMW Z3 roadster

How do i turn off the "check engine" light on a 1998 BMW roadster? We just bought the car and the person we bought it from lost the gas cap - we think the dummy light is on because of the gas cap being gone. We bought a gas cap and want to turn off the check engine light.

Yes the light is because of the gas cap being gone (sets code in evaporative emissions system), replace the gas cap, disconnect the battery for five minutes and that will turn of/reset the light, make sure u have the radio code before u do this, if u don't u will have no radio after the battery is disconnected..

My 1997 BMW Z3 1.9 engine Convertible " Engine Check Light Stays On" Please Help with SUGGESTIONS. Thanks

What you need to do is get a scanner and pull the code(s). They will help you to know where you need to investigate next...REMEMBER the code is a clue NOT necessarily the issue. For example, a lean condition can manifest as a missfire, and you can get oxygen sensor limit errors...and these items are registering correctly (meaning replacement does nothing). Pull the codes and go from there.

BMW z3 1998 1.9 liter engine cylinder head replacement

This is almost as expensive as installing a used engine, around $5,000.00 to $6,000.00 the last time I checked with BMW.

Check engine light on 1998 Z3 BMW

BMW engine light

Comes on if DME engine management system self diagnostic fault detected. Will stay on until codes are called up and memory erased.

With OBD read the code as follows. Turn on ignition key, press accelerator pedal to the floor five times within 5 seconds. The check engine light will remain on for 5 sec , blik off, come on for 2,5 sec, go off for 2,5 sec and fault code will begin to flash. If more than one fault exist 2nd fault code will be separated by 2,5 sec pause. after fault codes there will be a 0.5 sec flash and light will remain off. to read codes again do procedure again.

Canceling of codes. make sure fault code is present (short blink and light goes out for long period), depress throttle pedal for at least 10 sec. read fault codes again and check for code 1444 (no faults stored.)

Check also the following, fuel pump, oxygen sensor, fuel injectors, engine coolant temp sensor, idle speed control valve, mass airflow sensor and too many other things.

Replacing BMW decals on the side of the 1998 BMW Z3 roadster

There is a spray product that I used a long time ago to remove the vinyl letters off a boat. It worked great just can't remember the name. Check with an auto paint supplyer.
