1997 Lincoln continental with rattle in the rear end.
I have recently purchased a 1997 Lincoln and am hearing a rattle in the rear end, seems to be near the truck area. I initially thought it was just a loose spare, not the case. Any thoughts?

One has nothing to do with the other...If they both seem to happen due to the other, it is purely coincidental. Sorry. Wait...If your rear air pump, if it has air leveling system, if the fuse blew during the alternator replacement due to a short, check the fuse. Other than that, there is no relation.
It likely has a slow leak in the suspension bags. Start the engine and let it idle. The compressor should come on and the car should level. If it does it again you might have to replace the rear struts. Expensive. about 1000. Or you can convert it to springs.
it should deflates only at trim height and shld stay at that level considering that there is no leak on the rear air suspension. Most probably leaking rear air suspension is the problem. The system works up to 45 minutes only after ignition off and will maintain the trim height
it could be your tensioner. it sounds like a clicky squeak. sometimes it may go away but it always comes back. thats what mine is but i havent fixed it yet. i doubt you can grease it, you probably need it replaced. not expensive, at least the part should be under 100 bucks
The system should reset itself if you drive it, the pump is under the hood on the pass side I think, there is a tire like valve there, I think you can bleed it off there, also the dealer can operate the system with a hand held tester and lower it.
