2 problems...01 Silverado

I have an 01 Silverado 1500 ext. Cab with just over 91000 miles on it. I bought it 3 months ago from a friend who bought it from a city auction. I have all the maintenance records, and the truck was taken care of. It ran perfect until a month ago... The brakes get hard when slowing down, and i cant stop. Ive researched the problem and diagnosed it to be an ABS sensor i believe?? Next problem... Lately i've been feeling and hearing a loud, deep, metal grinding sound that seems to be coming from right around the middle of the truck. It seems to only happen when im going 20-55 mph, and turning. The grinding is worse when i'm turning right, but it has started happening while turning left as well. I've heard it could be hubs, wheel bearings, or cv joints, and i do not have the funds to replace everything. Any help would be amazing, as i rely on this truck for work and have no other vehicles. Thanks for any help, John.

Sounds to me like you have a bad front hub. The good news is that the wheel speed sensors are part of the wheel hubs. The tricky part can be to figure out which side is bad. If the noise is worse when turning right, it is most likely the left side that is bad. You could try jacking up each corner and shaking the wheels to see if there is any play.

SOURCE: 1998 Silverado 1500 Rear End Howl/Leak/Clunk/Vibration Pinion

A pinion seal leaks for one or boyh of these reasons. A worn pinion bearing or a driveshaft vibration, Sounds as though you have both. Do not confuse tire howl with gear howl, be sure. The rear end can run 3 to 500.00 if not more. Ck the gear oil in the rearend for metal content. That will tell you alot. The hard shifting is generally from a sticky spool in the trans valve body. Have the trans serviced w/new oil and filter. The new oil often cleans the moving parts of gum and varnish buildup.in the valve body. One more thing, the rear ends take a special oil and additive if it's a limited slip or posi lock. You will have a popping/binding noise when turning if the wrong lube is install. Have your driveshaft aligned and balanced at at driveshaft shop.or you will end up tearing up the tailshaft on the trans. Good Luck

SOURCE: 2002 2WD CHEVY TAHOE ABS

Its possible that right wheel speed sensor is dropping out early making the truck think that wheel is locking up. That will activate the ABS and let the brake go on the right wheel which will make the vehicle pull slightly left. The only way to know for sure is to watch the wheel speeds on a scanner and see which one is drpping out first and replacing that speed sensor/bearing assembly.

good Luck

SOURCE: ABS brakes grunt, groan noise with brake pedal travel.

Joe it is common for the brakes to moan when they wear down and sometimes they will squeak, try replacing the front pads and lubing the shafts on the calipers install anti squeal on the back of the pads, the ABS device would not cause noise as they are just a ring with a magnet and the reluctor ring spins and the magnet detects the spinning of the reluctor ring, they don't even touch and are stationary in place where they are mounted. There is a possibility that the brake fluid is dirty and could cause the abs motor to groan but you would just have to flush the system, When you don't put your foot in it on the brakes it will make some noise even new, I have a 2008 ford ranger that makes the same noise and the brakes are fine. You will have to adjust your braking habits to stop the noise. You can change the pads and that will help but not for long, be sure when you are operating your brakes press firmly on the pedal until you stop. If the brakes make noise after you let up on the pedal then the caliper parts need to be cleaned and lubed, however it is not a safety issue.

SOURCE: humming noise coming from left front tire, just started two days!

If the tires are wearing normal then its not the ball joint. If it worse while turning one way and quieter turning the other way it a wheel bearing. A ball joint does'nt make a constant noise.

SOURCE: 98 Cavalier Makes loud vibrating noise

sounds like another bad hub brg, jack up front end and check for play in wheels from top to bottom wiggle for movement. A loose wheel brg will set a front speed sensor code.
