My dad has a1995 dodge dakota 2WD 3.9 liter. when it is cold it has a miss and runs rough but once the motor warms up it runs smooth. it has 274 thousand miles on it. I told him to just get rid of it but he says no its been a good truck. Need help trying to figure out this problem so i he can get it back to running right
The first thing I would do is replace the timing chain if it has one. The timing chain is the weak link in high milage engines. With milage that high I can guarantee the timing chain is stretched. If the engine has a timing belt, then check it for trouble codes. It sounds like it may have a bad O2 sensor. When an O2 sensor goes bad the engine goes into fail-safe mode and runs in a full rich fuel trim. This causes the spark plugs to "load up" on unburnt fuel, causing the engine to run rough until cylinder tempratures get high enough to burn all of the fuel.

clean out the carb and fit an inline fuel filter between the pump and the carb .

When I do those I find it's easier to get some of the stuff out of the way. Fan shroud, Alternator, AC compressor(don't remove AC hoses just swing it over to the side) and the AC/alternator mount bracket. If you don't have the special hose clamp plyers they are worth buying. (those clamps are difficult with regular plyers) The fan clutch has a special wrench which is thinner. When you start the job break loose the fan clutch before you remove the belt. It keeps tension on the pulley. The nut is normal threading and usually comes loose with a sharp rap of the hammer on the fan clutch wrench.
Here is an illustration of the water pump bolts. I hope this helps you out. let me know how it goes.

when this occurs you need to check fuel pump presure ,see if it is below 20psi or so if it is the fuel pump is trying to go out
