As you probably know by now there is no way to pass an emissions test as long as the check engine light is on....Your car is what they call an OBD2 system... You need to have the diagnostics codes pulled by a special tester specifically for OBD 2 systems... Once codes are pulled fix if necessary any problem and have the codes cleared... This will turn the check engine light off an enable you to pass smog providing your car is running properly...

When the service engine light come's on this means there is a problem with your car, you will need to find the code output for the service engine light , you can do this by using an OBD tester, underneath the drivers side dash there is a test port where the OBD tester plugs into, this will give you the specific reason for the service engine light, if you don't have an OBD tester or can't afford one some auto parts supplier stores will do this test for you at no cost.

To reset the Engine Light, you'll need a OBD II scanner. It cost about $100.

Or, you can go to you local auto-parts store. Most stores will turn the Engine Light off for you for free using their scanner.

you can also read the OBD system by using the check engine light itself, simple rotating the key on and off will cause the light to flash. the exact number of times to rotate will be found in a repair manual. P.s. the OBD connector is under the steering wheel

If your getting a service engine light on your dash there is something wrong with the engine, this light alerts you when a problem arises, you will need to find out what the problem is by reading the code output for the engine light with an obd tester, if you don't have one you can buy one, or you can try taking it to an auto parts store some places will read the code for you at no cost.

OBD 2 (96-2008) does not have that capability, older systems did up to the 1995 model year. You can buy a tester that does just codes on ebay for less than $40.00, live data stream testers are about double that.

the obd2 hook up should be behind the ash tray just pull it out and the hook up should be there the check engine light could be anything but if i had to guess i would say o2 sensor but dont hold me to that
