I lost my car keys to a Oldsmobile 88' 1998, does anyone know if there is a chip in that ignition key? I am trying to figure out how much this is gonna cost me.
Yes it is a coded key, the problem is without the resistance value of the original key (the little piece of resistive wire embedded in the key shaft) you will have re-program the system to the new key value. The keys will run about $20 US each and the programming about 1/2 hr or $50. Do yourself a favor get two keys done.

The chip in the key talks to the transponder in the steering column and the data from the key is sent to the ECM, BCM and PCM. If the data matches what it knows as registered, it sends power to the ignition module. It stops vehicles being stolen.
You need an auto locksmith or the dealership and a new chipped key, cut, and programmed. Have two made.
Your vehicle came with two chipped keys and a valet key, when the first chipped key is lost, you replace it so you always have a spare. Lesson learned.
probably need to keys so that a key could be clone from a good key
if you lost a key and want a spare , there is no way around it except to buy a new fob key and have it programmed to the immobilizer system
I think this job is too tedious to do here, so I suggest you call an oldsmobile dealership and ask to speak with a mechanic. Customer service can direct you to where you need to go. Sorry,
So you changed the battery in the key? and this is the problem i suspect that you have lost the chip out of the key when you took the key apart to change the battery ,dont worry its happens to the best of us the phone rings or you get distracted -if you have lost the chip then try the spare key if you do not have one call the dealer and have a spare key and a new chip in your key programmed up-
Ive seen this happen before, if its got a chip in it, you have 15 different possibilities. You have to put an ohm meter on the old key to figure out what you have. Sucks you don't have the original key. Best bet, bypass the whole system. Check out this link. You'll find what your looking for. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
By trying to use another key yu triggered the antitheft system which prevents the car from starting. The only solution is to take it to a dealership and have them replace the ignition switch, the key and the module. About $1000.00. Or you can get a bypass system for about half that, maybe less. Check out this website before you do anything. http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass.
There no way runs through your computer, your truck is in theft mode, most lock smiths have the computer to program a chip to your pag system, you have a key already won't be that much to do.
You cannot start the car without the chip. That's why it's called anti-theft device. The purpose is just that: to prevent anybody to steal the car with a screwdriver. You have to get a new cylinder and a new key from the authorized dealer. You'll probably need some proof of ownership.
