I also have a 1998 Subaru Forester that loses power and the Hold light starts flashing. I bought the car gently used form Japan four years ago and haven't had any problems with it until recently.

The hold light is probably for a fault in the HILL HOLDER SYSTEM

This system holds the Forester on a hill without using the brake pedal, as long as you keep the clutch depressed. It's very useful when towing.

I will check my workshop manual as soon as I have some free time and try to get a definitive answer for you.

This indicates a faulty solenoid issue on your gearbox/AT specifically the one that controls the diff clutch system.

My 2009 subaru forester has 35000 miles on it. The temp light was blinking on and off randomly last week but now it is on constantly. Could the thermostat need replacing? I was under the impression that...

The light flashing could be a simple "low on coolant or water". You may want to replace you reservoir cap, you will lose water over time if these go bad.

How do you reset the computer on a 1998 subaru forester without the wireless remote?

I am thinking you mean the alarm system. If so, Just locate the box under dash by where your left knee sits. It is about 4" x4" x 1". It has a wire lead that has a small button on it. Just push and hold the button for about 15 secounds and it will reset itself. That should stop the marker lights from flashing. Good luck and hope this helps. Have a great day.

1998 subaru forester runs rough when it rains.

Check the cap and rotor for internal carbon tracking or, just change them. Also, take a look at the coil when its dark and rainy and see if there is any arcing where the coil wire goes into it.

Hazard lights flashing

I have a 97 subaru outback and encountered the same problem. It is a security device on all newer subaru's. After changing or charging the battery, leave the negetive battery cable disconnected. Turn the key to the "on" position, then reconnect the negative terminal. This will stop the flashing.
