Dashboard lights are out and rear lights, also a pulling sensation when changing gears especially and a horrible sort of screeching noise when I start the engine!!

Is there anything right with my car?! First of all for some time when I turn on the engine I get this screeching sound? Is that something to do with the cam belt?!! I don't actually no what that is. Or what functions it has! Last night I also realized how dark the interior of my car was, to then realize the dashboard lights were out! I tried turning my car on and off and thinking that my lights weren't on... but they were, so the dashboard lights are out for sure and also, I got out my car to check my exterior lights and the rear have gone? Is the light situation possibly connected? I thought maybe the fuse had gone, so I need to check that but don;t know what I'm looking for or what I need to actually do?! Also within the last few days I have found that my car has seemed to struggle a bit, it seems especially when I change gears? If I'm stationery and try and pull off, it's as if I'm trying to pull off in a higher gear, that sort of pulling feeling? It also did it again last night when I were doing a three point turn and put the car into reverse. Would really appreciate any feedback!!

This is really weird, I've just gone back out to my car and turned on the engine and lights and now the dashboard is working and so are my rear lights?! I'm a little bit baffled?!

Well that was quick :) I just phoned the Kia garage, the car is still inside it's 3 year warranty, described the problem and they knew immediately what the cause is. Seems like we are not the only Kia owners to have this fault. It's cauded by by a gadget called the 'Timer and Alarm' unit. They've ordered one and it's being fitted next week.

You aren't alone with your lights problem . Mu '59 Picanto did exactly the same thing last night. No dashboard, heater, or air vent illumination and worse still no rear lights (note brake lights do work). Got home switched off everything, then switched back on and all working. Very strange.

SOURCE: 2002 KIA Spectra GSX Dashboard lights out

you can't just look at the fuses. buy a fuse tester, usually 10 bucks or so at any parts store. then you can properly check all the fuses. chances are that's what it is, but you have to check it the right way. find the bad one, and replace it. the people at the auto store should be able to help a little. hope that helps.

SOURCE: when driving my kia it seems to stall but not cut

Check the black plug sticking out of the engin cover, not making good contact, clean it and put back plug, disconnect battery and reconnect again it should work fine.

If drive belt has slight wobble and makng schreeching noise, do you need to change out both the drive belt and tensioner arm and would there be a problem with one or more idle pulleys ? Thanks

check all pulleys and components also have alternator tested --screeching is belt slipping ---if tensioner is damaged or worn change it

Strange noise coming from transmission

There are 2 rods inside the transmission that had each gear on. The upper rod which is also the input shaft that goes through the clutch has 1, 3, 5. The lower rod that sits right under it has the other gears on it. Each one of those rods have bearings on each end. The upper rod may bearing may be bad and may have come apart inside the trans.

Turns over but wont crank...horrible screeching noise

To clarify, if the engine cranks or turns over but won't start, look for a stuck pulley on the engine. You may be hearing the belt slipping on that pulley. Take the belt off and try turning each pulley - also try starting the engine with the belt off.

S reg peugeot 306 1.9 gearbox??

It may be the clutch thrust bearing drying up.
Causing it to start seizeing.
The easiest solution is to change the whole clutch, or get it changed in a garage as you do need some specialist tools and knowledge.
Check the fan belt as the can make the same screech when worn or loose.

Starter motor cranks well but emits a horrible screeching noise as it comes to rest after starting engine.. I suspect the bushing in gearbox housing. Anyone experienced this prob. Regards Warren

actually this sound to me as to be the kick out bearing on the starter itself. after it has been on the car for a few years they tend to get moisture into the outer bearing on the starter this washes the grease out over time and it makes a horrible growling, screeching, or rubbing noise after starting. this starter should be replaced in the near future if not it will seize up and just click when trying to start the car....... I hope this has been helpful.

Loud screeching noise coming from car after stops.

the screeching noise is most likely caused by a slipping belt or pully. transmission probably needs fluid and filter changed.

97 Neon Expresso, Schreeching Fan

Both your air con and defogger (I am assuming you mean front windshield defroster setting, and not the back window) engage the air conditioner pump/compressor.

The screeching can be either a bad belt or a bad compressor.

How long has it been since the belt was changed? If it is old, and slipping, it will cause the screech at speed.
If the belt has recently been changed, and is adjusted properly, I would start looking that the air compressor pump.
