This caused by worn gears called synchros. These are brass gears which aid in aligning the gears so they can be changed smoothly. The transmission will need to be pulled to erplace these items. If everything is in good shape other than those, you shouldn't be spending more than a few hundred for all labor and parts (USD). An automatic would be a whole lot more. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi, The reverse light for my Nissan Almera is lighting when its in neutral not in reverse.

This is the reversing light switch. For $18 it is worth swapping out for a new one, but my feeling is that is something inside the transmission that is not in the right place that actuates it. Hopefully, you might even find it has come loose.

Having said that, this link say the switch does both neutral indicator and reversing light. That gives more reasoning that the switch is faulty.

I have a 2001 nissan xterra - will not engage in reverse gear - any solutions?

Does it seem to bog down when in reverse as you accelerate? If so the trans maybe stuck in forward gear (mechanical problem) resulting in both forward & rev being applied.
