The instructions to remove the outer spool are not in the manual as Roy suggest. You need to wedge something in between the retaining clip and the back of the outer spool and pry the retaining clip off the shaft. You can use pliers after you get some space between the two.

When you order the Outer Spool Assembly, a new retaining clip will come with it. install with a deep socket or tap it on with a screw driver. Careful not to damage the shaft when removing or installing a new assembly.

I am trying to remove the outer spool assembly. How do I do it?

What does it say in the user manual? Or possibly you don't have one and haven't gone online to get one.

Anyway, most of these spools are removed by pushing two lugs together while pulling the spool away from the housing. Replacement is by just positioning the spool and pushing it into the housing until it clicks into place.

Weedeater repair

Its possible that the drive shaft is broken or the end of the shaft is worn where it hooks into the gear head. The trimmer head has a hex fitting that meshes with the gear assembly in order for it to turn, its possible the hex is worn on the cutting head from usage, which would require replacing the outer spool assembly. The string on my Troybilt tb70ss just keeps coming out of the spool when I try to weedeat. I am pretty sure I have followed the directions. What is the problem?

there should be a small hole to put string in on center of spool.
you might be winding the line the wrong way around try winding line in other direction.

Bumping does not release cord

its possible that the line is too thick,or incorrectly wound,or too much line on the spool,or the spool is clogged with grass, rgds

How do i remove the outer assembly spool on a troy built gas trimmer tb575ss

If you are talking about the side where the clutch is, there is a Torx screw inside the hollow part of the clutch housing. Using a #20 Torx bit, loosen screw. If this is the first time on this screw it will be tight and the drive shaft will turn with it. You will have to remove top of cylinder head and put something soft inside the cylinder to stop piston from moving up and down; usually a towel and something stiff like a screwdriver to hold it from moving.
After clutch housing is removed, the clutch itself is threaded and by holding the shaft with pliers you can unscrew the clutch.
Past this, just screws holding the plastic housing.

Cannot get the housing off so that I can change the pull cord on my troy bilt tb70ss grass trimmer

If you are holding the unit where the drive cable goes in, there is a screw in there. It is a #15 or 20 TORX screwdriver. Take out the screw and it will allow you to get to the starting spool. Good luck...Lee

The spool came unscrewed from the shaft - we can't

It's probably a left-hand thread, turn it counter-clockwise to tighten.

Look on the spool. It will show a decimal near the notches at the edge. I have two different sizes on mine so you may too. Good luck...Lee
